From the initial site selection, consultation and regulatory approval, through the construction, operation and maintenance phases, to conclusion and environmental cleanup, Vertex offers a diverse range of services throughout the life cycle of our clients' projects.OVERVIEWVertex is seeking a full time, permanent Intermediate Environmental Scientist to join our Sarnia, Ontario team. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical background in environmental site assessment, remediation, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance. This role is primarily field-based and involves planning and executing environmental investigations, overseeing drilling and sampling programs, collecting and interpreting environmental data, and supporting remediation across a variety of project types. When not in the field, you will be responsible for data interpretation, analysis, and technical report writing.Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Intermediate Environmental Scientist will play a key role in delivering high-quality environmental services while ensuring compliance with applicable provincial and federal regulations, including Ontario's Excess Soil Regulation and environmental site assessment requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, Indigenous communities, contractors, and internal technical teams to support secure, effective, and practical environmental solutions.This position is well suited for a motivated environmental professional who enjoys a balance of field and office work, thrives in a dynamic environment, and is passionate about environmental stewardship, technical excellence, and mentoring junior staff.CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONSA Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related disciplineA minimum of 4 years of experience executing environmental assessment, remediation, reclamation, and monitoring projects for oil and gas clients, preferably within a consulting environmentProfessional designation or eligibility for registration with a recognized professional association (e.G., P.Eng., P.Geo., EP) is considered an assetProject experience involving oil and gas projects is preferredProven experience planning and executing Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), including drilling programs, soil sampling,



and groundwater monitoringStrong understanding of Ontario environmental regulations, including ESA and Excess Soil requirements; experience working in other provinces and territories is considered an assetExcellent client relationship management and communication skillsStrong verbal and written communication abilities, with demonstrated experience preparing high‐quality technical reportsCommitment to teamwork, collaboration, and mentoring junior environmental professionals.Experience implementing alternative remediation technologies and risk assessment approachesStrong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with municipalities, First Nations communities, regulatory agencies, and other government organizationsPossession of a valid Ontario driver's license and a clean driving record is requiredExceptional organizational, planning, and time management skillsSelf‐motivated with a proactive, solution‐oriented approach and the ability to thrive in a fast‐paced, challenging environmentCurrent industry safety certifications are considered an assetRESPONSIBILITIESExecute environmental projects and field programs, including site investigations, environmental monitoring, data collection, and technical reporting, with approximately 60% field‐based workConduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry best practicesPlan and conduct Phase II ESAs, including drilling programs, test pitting, soil sampling, groundwater monitoring, monitoring well installation, and data interpretationLead and coordinate environmental field activities, including the supervision of drilling contractors, subcontractors, technicians, and junior staffParticipate in and facilitate investigations related to environmental incidents and spills, including site assessment, delineation, and reportingConduct groundwater, surface water, soil, sediment, vapour, and other environmental sampling programsSupport contaminated site assessment, site remediation, reclamation,



and environmental monitoring projectsMonitor remediation and reclamation activities and provide technical recommendations based on field observations and analytical resultsAssist with excess soil characterization, management, and compliance activities in accordance with applicable regulationsPrepare detailed field notes, site records, technical memoranda, environmental reports, and regulatory documentationReview and interpret laboratory analytical data and field information to support site characterization and environmental decision‐makingEnsure all field activities are conducted safely and in compliance with company health, safety, environmental, and quality management systemsPerform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of field data, sampling procedures, and project documentationMaintain environmental monitoring equipment and ensure field instruments are properly calibrated and operatedBuild and maintain effective working relationships with clients,, Indigenous communities, contractors, and internal stakeholdersCoordinate with Project Managers and technical discipline leads to ensure the timely completion of field programs, deliverables, and reporting requirementsProvide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior environmental professionalsSupport regulatory inspections, site visits, and environmental compliance assessments as requiredParticipate in emergency response and spill response activities, including occasional after‐hours support when requiredStay current with environmental regulations, industry standards, and emerging assessment, monitoring, remediation, and reclamation practicesDemonstrate strong communication, problem‐solving, and interpersonal skills while working in multidisciplinary project teamsPerform other related duties as assignedWORKING CONDITIONSCombination of office, remote, and field‐based work, with flexibility based on project needsRegular field assignments requiring travel and leadership presence on active sitesParticipation in physically demanding outdoor work, including oversight of staff in varying weather, terrain, and site conditionsRequirement to exercise independent judgment and decision‐making during field execution and site supervisionLOCATIONThis position will be based out of Sarnia Ontario, with some travel.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCompensation is commensurate with education and experienceA comprehensive benefit package is providedEligibility in the Vertex RRSP programLearning and development opportunitiesA culture of performance and accountabilityA supportive and positive team environmentWe would like to thank all applicants for their interest in this position, however only those selected for interviews will be contacted
