This is a full-time, continuous opportunity for an experienced Heavy Equipment Technician who brings solid diagnostic capability, sound judgment and a commitment to safe, reliable public service. The successful candidate will play a central role in maintaining Jasper’s municipal vehicles and equipment, supporting seasonal and emergency operations, and strengthening the Municipality’s fleet maintenance program.
Reporting to the Municipal Building and Asset Manager, the Fleet Technician is responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing the Municipality’s heavy equipment, emergency service units and light-, medium- and heavy-duty fleet vehicles. The role combines hands‑on mechanical work with diagnostic, regulatory, administrative and supervisory responsibilities.
The Fleet
Technician will maintain accurate service records, manage parts and inventory, oversee fleet compliance requirements, support registered apprentices and provide guidance to the Municipal Fleet Mechanic. This position requires someone who can work independently, respond effectively to operational priorities and maintain clear communication with management and other municipal teams.
Fleet
Maintenance and Repair Inspect, diagnose, service and repair municipal vehicles and equipment, including emergency service units. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues using technical manuals, diagnostic software and testing equipment. Complete repairs and maintenance in accordance with municipal standards, manufacturer requirements and applicable regulations.
Operate municipal vehicles and equipment safely when required for inspection, testing, maintenance and operational support. Support seasonal, emergency response, snow removal and road maintenance operations.
Regulatory
Compliance and Safety Ensure vehicles and equipment comply with applicable Alberta transportation, commercial vehicle and occupational health and safety requirements. Monitor registration, inspection and renewal requirements under the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program. Maintain accurate inspection records, service reports and maintenance documentation.
Participate actively in workplace safety programs and required safety training. Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment and safe work practices are consistently followed. Identify and report unsafe equipment, working conditions or operational risks.
Fleet
Administration and Inventory Maintain accurate digital and physical maintenance records. Use computer systems and diagnostic software to monitor maintenance activity and fleet condition. Procure, receive and track parts and materials in accordance with municipal purchasing and accounting procedures.
Maintain an organized and current inventory of parts, supplies and components. Monitor fleet vehicles, inventory and municipal operators for compliance with the Municipality’s fleet and asset management programs. Work collaboratively with Public Works and other municipal departments to support operational readiness and service delivery.
Provide guidance and oversight to the Municipal Fleet Mechanic. Educate staff on fleet operation, inspection and maintenance requirements. Ensure municipal operators understand their responsibilities under the Municipality’s fleet maintenance program.
Monitor staff performance and support adherence to established procedures,
productivity expectations and safety standards. Maintain clear and timely communication with management regarding fleet operations, maintenance requirements, employee performance and emerging risks. An accredited Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson Certification.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information
System certification. A valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement. Demonstrated experience diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues. The ability to maintain accurate service, inspection and maintenance records.
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively within a team environment. The following qualifications and experience would be considered assets: Class 1 Driver’s Licence. Welding and fabrication experience.
Certified forklift operation training.
Experience operating heavy equipment such as loaders, graders or backhoes. Proficiency with computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Alberta Transportation online services.
Experience maintaining municipal, public works, emergency response or comparable commercial fleets. Technically capable and confident working across a diverse fleet. Organized and consistent in maintaining records, inventory and compliance requirements. Comfortable providing direction, coaching and performance feedback. Committed to public service and the responsible stewardship of municipal assets.
Compensation ranges from $44.68 to $48.42 per hour. The regular schedule is Monday to Friday, eight hours per day and 40 hours per week. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required in response to operational needs.
The Municipality offers competitive wages and benefits. Relocation is an important consideration for this opportunity. Final housing arrangements, rental terms and any additional subsidy will be confirmed directly between the Municipality and the successful candidate.
