On November 29,2024, SPS became the police of jurisdiction, and assumed responsibility andcommand for policing and law enforcement in Surrey. POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time Media Relations Coordinator to join our Communications Section, within the Office ofthe Chief Constable. Reporting to the Sergeant/Media Relations Officer, Media Relations Unit, the incumbent identifies and distributes issues that may benewsworthy, liaises with members of the media, public, internal sections, andemployees.
Supports and assists the Media Relations Officers in the preparationof news releases, media advisories, and public messaging. They also track anddistribute enquiries from internal and external sources for responses by SPS’sMedia Relations Officers or designates.
The incumbent will exercise a significant degree of judgement and initiative within established guidelinesunder general direction.
Schedule / Hours of Work
This is an on-site position,
and hybrid work is not currently supported. The anticipated schedulefor this position is 35 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject tochange based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinatesmedia interviews, events, and press conferences.
- Monitorsand reviews daily news media for relevant stories and catalogues anddistributes notable information.
- Assiststhe Media Relations Officers in monitoring, tracking, and responding to mediarelations enquiries received by phone or email.
- Respondsto enquiries from external government agencies, journalists, civilians, and otherpolice agencies.
- Researches,verifies, and summarizes file and related information to prepare news releasesand/or prepare spokespersons for media interviews.
- Draftsnews releases, media advisories, and public messaging for approval by Media Relations Officers or appropriate SPS employees.
- Preparesand produces media related materials.
- Maintainsand updates databases of media files, media contact information, messaging,background information, and other related data.
- Tracksand provides media-related statistics to relevant stakeholders.
- Postsnews releases online through the appropriate communication channels.
- Providesguidance and training to staff in a workplace setting.
- Performsother related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completionof Grade 12, supplemented by a degree or diploma in communications, journalism,media, public relations, or a related field.
- Aminimum of four years related experience
- Anequivalent combination of training and experience.
- Previouspolice experience preferred
All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearancethroughout their employment with SPS, which includesa mandatory polygraph examination.

This is a unionized position, representedby CUPE 402.
The compensation range is $38.25/hour- $41.75/hour (pay grade 19) based on 2026 rates.
