We are presently hiring a part-time school Physiotherapist (PT) to work on our team of dedicated and knowledgeable PTs providing quality services in Nunavut schools. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, supporting students and the school team to meet the needs of all learners. The applicant can be based anywhere in Canada but must be adaptable to travel regularly to provide services in Nunavut schools and provide virtual follow up services from a home-based office.
Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION and QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Baccalaureate or Masters Degree in Physiotherapy.
- Currently registered to practice Physiotherapy with good standing in a Canadian Province.
- Membership in Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
EXPERIENCE:
- General clinical experience of two or more years is preferred.
- If less than two years experience, successful completion of certification exam is required.
- Experience writing reports and drafting own correspondence is preferred.
- Experience with children preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Effective communication skills, oral and written are required.
- Time management, organizational and problem solving skills are required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
- An understanding of the health care system and health practices is required.
- Must have a well developed understanding of professional responsibility and confidentiality is required.
- Must be able to work as a team member but with limited supervision and therefore must be self-directed and able to prioritize own work is required.
- Computer literacy is required.
- The ability to work with a multidisciplinary team effectively is required.
- Creativity and adaptability in working situations which may vary greatly in their quality and availability of resources is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES:
- Experience in program development is preferred.
- Experience working in schools is preferred.
- Experience working in Response to Intervention model is preferred.
- Cross cultural awareness and experienceis preferred.
- Experience with virtual therapy and virtual therapy platforms is preferred.
- Inuktitut Language proficiency an asset.
Key responsibilities
CLIENT CARE:
- Conducting an accurate clinical assessment relevant to the client’s needs.
- Establish, implement and evaluate appropriate therapeutic interventions for individual clients.
- Consulting with the client and multidisciplinary teams to modify or discontinue interventions as appropriate.
- Act in a manner consistent with the professional responsibilities and standards of practice.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT:
- Develop program plans for individual clients and groups that will be implemented in theschool setting, work with families, school support staff, caregivers and other health professional to demonstrate how programs and equipment are to be used in the relevant setting.
- Provide consultation and work in partnership with a variety of multidisciplinary teams and community and government agencies to determine the most appropriate services and programs for individual clients and communities in Nunavut.
- Develop new Physiotherapy programs to address the needs of Nunavut students, in cooperation with the Therapy Services Team Leader, Director of Medical Rehabilitation Programs, the Department of Education, and the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.
EDUCATION:
- Help the client and caregivers understand the nature of the client's disorder and set and review goals in collaboration with them.
- Provide education to clients, families, the school team, and other caregivers on how to carry out intervention recommendations.
- Provide ongoing school based education and health promotion by: developing client handout material and public education material on disorders of the musculo-skeletal, neurological and cardio-pulmonary systems; providing ongoing education to a variety of individuals and groups about these disorders and the role of the physiotherapist; providing education to clients, families and other caregivers on how to carry out treatment recommendations using the equipment or exercise program prescribed; providing clinical teaching or lecturing to other groups as required.
- Maintain professional competenceby keeping abreast of current practices and therapies to contribute to achieving the best outcomes for clients.
- Participate in Educational Activities by:
- making recommendations,
training, supervising and/or evaluating medical rehabilitation students and school team members such as teachers and assistant as appropriate.
- providing public education through teaching sessions a; acting as a resource to the school team.
- Maintain skilled competence by keeping abreast of current practices and therapies to contribute achieving the best outcomes for clients.
MANAGEMENT:
- Management of client care indirect activities such as equipment prescription, referral management, community visit preparation, documentation and other activities as needed to manage client care.
- Contribute to the management of the department bymaking recommendations for Capital Budget needs to the School Therapy Service Team Leader; collaborating in the development and achievement of departmental goals and objectives; and, collecting and analyzing workload statistics to ensure appropriate program direction.
- Maintains written procedures, indexes, logs and records for activities within the area of responsibility. Maintains appropriate file systems and patient caseloads and records with guides and indexes, including computer records, back-up files, statistical data, etc.
- Provide the assessment findings, analysis, treatment, response to treatment, and discharge planning in the patient chart. Charting should follow Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics of a Canadian Provincial College, National Association, and Ongomiizwin Health Service guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as determined by Therapy Services Team Leader and the Director of Medical Rehabilitation Programs.
