Business Unit: Maintenance Department
Location: Lax Kw’alaams, British Columbia
Reporting to: Infrastructure Director
The Lax Kw’alaams Maintenance Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full-Time Driver.
As a key member of the team, the Driver is responsible for the safe and reliable transportation of staff, service providers, students, and Elders attending events, as well as the pick-up and delivery of supplies and freight and providing transportation in emergency situations to and from the Lax Kw’alaams community.
The position involves operating the community bus, trucks, and other Band vehicles on established routes and as operationally required. The Driver is expected to provide safe, courteous, and dependable transportation while maintaining a high standard of customer service.
Strong communication skills, patience, dependability, sound judgment, and excellent driving and navigation
skills are essential to effectively support the transportation needs of the Lax Kw’alaams community.
Responsibilities:
General
Drive buses and company vehicles safely, courteously, and reliably throughout the assigned service area and along established routes and destinations
Ensure complete daily logs of passengers and delivery services
Operate vehicles safely and responsibly while being prepared for varying road and weather conditions
Ensure compliance with Hours-of-Service requirements
Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including fueling and identifying potential maintenance or safety issues
Report delays, mechanical problems, malfunctions, accidents, and other vehicle or safety concerns immediately to the supervisor
Complete and submit all required paperwork, records, and written reports
Provide friendly and professional customer service and maintain positive interactions with passengers and the public
Assist passengers with boarding, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility aids
Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage, parcels, and other items
Maintain a clean and presentable interior and exterior of the bus and company vehicle used
Maintain control of passenger activities during travel and address behaviours or distractions that may compromise safety
Communicate with supervisor and other staff using two-way radio systems as required
Complete required passenger, incident, and accident reports and communicate relevant information to supervisor
Ensure passenger safety and welfare during emergencies and direct passengers during evacuation procedures
Transport community members on assigned and approved trips only
Transport service providers to and from the community as required by different departments
Pick up, transport, and deliver freight, supplies, and parcels safely and efficiently between the community, departments, and designated destinations
Seasonal driving, such as operating plow trucks when required
Filling in for other drivers as required
When no driving work is available, work as a maintenance worker
Perform all other duties as assigned and within the scope of the position
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid Class 1 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement, or equivalent licence
Completion of a professional driver training program is an asset
Experience
Previous motorcoach or commercial driving experience
Previous customer service experience
Competency
Ability to adapt to changing road, weather, traffic, and passenger conditions
Ability to communicate effectively with passengers, supervisors, and other staff
Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
Ability to safely assist passengers with mobility needs
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Clean driver’s abstract

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Physical Demand
Prolonged periods of sitting while operating a bus or company vehicle
Repetitive movements, including steering, operating vehicle controls, and entering information
Frequent use of hands and arms to operate vehicle controls, doors, ramps, and other equipment
Manual handling of freight, supplies, parcels, and passenger luggage
Ability to safely lift, carry, load, and unload items weighing over 50 lbs as required
Mental Demands
Ability to maintain concentration and awareness for extended periods while operating a vehicle
Ability to remain calm, patient, and skilled when dealing with challenging situations or passengers
Ability to respond appropriately to changing road, traffic and weather conditions
Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities at the same time while maintaining a strong focus on passenger and public safety
Ability to prepare for and respond appropriately to emergencies and stressful situations at any time
Conditions of Employment
Adhere to the Lax Kw’alaams Band Code of Conduct, Code of Confidentiality, Social Media Policy, and all other applicable policies contained in the Human Resources Manual.
Perform duties in a harmonious, respectful, and cooperative manner, contributing to a team-oriented workplace and the overall success of the Lax Kw’alaams Band.
Provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, as required.
Be available to work overtime when operationally required.
Possess and maintain a valid First Aid certification.
Maintain a clean Driver’s Abstract, with an updated Driver’s Abstract to be provided annually
Possess and maintain a valid Class 1 Driver’s Licence.
Classification/Pay Scale
$38 per hour
As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
