Reporting to: Education Manager
The Lax Kw’alaams Daycare has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full-Time Daycare Supervisor. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the Lax Kw’alaams Daycare, ensuring a safe, nurturing and culturally rich environment for children. This role involves developing and implementing programs that support early childhood development while reflecting the cultural values and traditions of the Lax Kw’alaams community.
Responsibilities
Program Oversight: Ensuring the smooth delivery of the daycare program, including planning, developing and implementing activities
Supervision: Provide day-to-day guidance, mentorship, and operational support to Daycare staff to ensure quality program delivery
Communication: Communicating with parents and families, keeping them informed of their child’s progress
Safety: Ensuring the daycare is a secure environment for children, including monitoring for safety and ensuring equipment is in good working order
Documentation: Recording and reporting accidents and maintaining attendance records
Policies and procedures: Update and train staff on policies and procedures and ensure compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act
Community engagement: Using community resources and connecting with the community
Program Development and Delivery
Design and implement age-appropriate early childhood education programs that foster children’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development
Collaborate with cultural leaders, Elders, and other community members to incorporate traditional teachings, language, and activities into the curriculum
Create a structured daily routine that includes play, learning, meal times, rest, and cultural enrichment activities
Regularly assess the effectiveness of programs through parent feedback, child observation, and staff input, and make necessary adjustments
Organise field trips and events that align with the Daycare’s educational goals and community values
Staff Support
Assist with orientation of new employees
Encourage and identify professional development opportunities, including cultural competency training and workshops
Foster a respectful, supportive and collaborative working environment
Assist with regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to help staff grow professionally
Monitor compliance with policies, procedures, licensing requirements, and safety standards, and communicate concerns or operational issues to the Education Manager
Cultural Integrations
Build and maintain positive relationships with Elders and knowledge keepers to guide the incorporation of Lax Kw’alaams cultural teachings into daily activities
Incorporate traditional songs, stories, crafts and language lessons in the daycare curriculum
Plan events to celebrate key cultural milestones, such as seasonal changes,
ceremonies, and other community celebrations
Promote cultural awareness by encouraging participation from children, families, and staff in cultural learning opportunities and activities
Daycare Operations
Collaborate with the Education Manager or Designate to ensure resources are allocated effectively
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of children’s attendance, incidents, and health and safety checks
Communicate regularly with parents and families regarding their child’s participation, development, and daily activities
Ensure the facility is clean, well-maintained, and equipped with the necessary resources for daily operations
Establish clear policies and procedures for emergencies, health protocols, and daily operations, ensuring staff and parents are well-informed
Compliance and Reporting
Stay up-to-date with provincial childcare regulations, ensuring the daycare remains fully licensed and compliant
Develop and implement safety protocols to protect children and staff, including regular fire drills and first aid preparedness
Prepare and submit monthly and annual reports to the Education Manager, highlighting program activities, achievements, challenges, and recommendations for continuous improvement
Public Relations and Communications
Communicate Daycare policies, procedures, and program information to families and staff as directed
Assist with newsletters, promotional materials, and community communications
Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
Perform other duties within the scope of the position and as assigned
Qualifications
A Diploma or Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) from a recognized institution
Early Childhood Educator (ECE) certification or registration with the provincial regulatory body, where required
Current certifications such as First Aid and CPR (often infant/child-specific) (Asset or willing to be trained)
Experience
7 years of experience working in a licensed childcare setting

Physical Demands and Working Setting

Ability to lift, carry, or assist children weighing up to 20–25 kg (45–55 lbs), as required

Frequent reaching, twisting, and repetitive hand movements for classroom activities and administrative tasks
Visual and auditory ability to supervise children effectively indoors and outdoors
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations, including evacuations and administering first aid if required
Ability to participate in active indoor and outdoor play in various weather conditions
Manual dexterity to prepare learning materials, use computers, and complete documentation
Ability to maintain focus and stamina in a busy, fast-paced childcare environment

Ability to interpret and apply childcare policies, licensing regulations, and procedures

Classification/Pay Scale
$35 per hour
