Job Description
Insight Global is seeking a Senior RF/Microwave Design Engineer to join a leading aerospace and satellite communications organization developing next-generation Software Defined Radio (SDR), SATCOM, telemetry, and telecommand technologies.
This individual will play a critical technical leadership role, owning RF hardware design activities throughout the full product lifecycle, from architecture and concept development through integration, testing, qualification, and production support.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in designing high-performance RF and microwave systems across UHF through Ka-Band frequencies and have experience supporting mission-critical aerospace, defense, or space programs.
This role offers the opportunity to work on advanced communications technologies that support both terrestrial and space-based applications.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of RF and microwave hardware for satellite communications, telemetry, telecommand, and Software Defined Radio systems.
- Develop RF system architectures and conduct technical trade studies to optimize performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Design active RF circuits including: Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs), Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs), Driver Amplifiers, Mixers, Frequency Converters, Frequency Synthesizers, and Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs)
- Perform RF system analysis including: Link budget analysis, Gain and noise calculations, Dynamic range analysis, and Linearity analysis
- Create RF schematics, select components, and collaborate with PCB layout teams to ensure design integrity.
- Support hardware integration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization throughout the development lifecycle.
- Execute and support RF testing, verification,
and qualification activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams including systems, mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineering groups.
- Support transition to production and provide technical guidance during manufacturing and qualification activities.
Skills and Requirements
Must-Have Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- 8+ years of hands-on RF/Microwave hardware design experience.
- Experience designing RF communication systems spanning UHF through Ka-Band frequencies.
- Proven expertise in active RF circuit design, including amplifier, frequency conversion, and synthesizer architectures.
- Strong understanding of RF system analysis, including: Link budgets, Noise figure calculations, Gain analysis, Energetic range analysis, Linearity analysis
- Experience with RF schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout support.
- Experience developing RF architectures and conducting design trade studies.
Required Technical Tools
- Experience working with several of the following industry-standard design and simulation tools: Keysight ADS, Cadence AWR, Ansys HFSS, CST Studio Suite, and MATLAB
Testing & Qualification Experience
- Hands-on experience performing RF measurements and troubleshooting using: Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), Spectrum Analyzers, Signal Generators,
Power Meters, Oscilloscopes, and Noise Figure Analyzers
Experience supporting environmental and qualification testing including: EMI/EMC Qualification, Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) Testing, Vibration Testing, Shock Testing, and Environmental Qualification Programs
Preferred Industry Experience
Candidates with experience in aerospace, defense, satellite communications, or advanced communications hardware environments are strongly preferred.
- Experience developing RF hardware for space applications and satellite payloads.
- Knowledge of Software Defined Radio (SDR) architectures.
- Familiarity with digital communications systems and SATCOM networks.
- Experience supporting programs requiring rigorous environmental qualification and reliability standards.
- Previous technical leadership or mentoring experience within an engineering organization.
