Job Description
As the Vice President of Underwriting, you will lead the overall underwriting function, ensuring underwriting quality, consistency, and profitability across all products and business segments.
You will develop and maintain underwriting guidelines, pricing tools, and authority frameworks while providing strategic direction to underwriting leaders and teams.
Working closely with Operations, Claims, Compliance, Finance, and Executive Leadership, you will help drive operational excellence and support corporate objectives.
You will oversee portfolio performance, identify opportunities for profitable growth, and maintain solid relationships with brokers, referral partners, and key stakeholders.
The role also involves monitoring market trends, evaluating competitive developments, building business cases for new products and enhancements, and contributing to long-term business strategy through participation in executive leadership and board-level discussions.
Skills and Requirements
10+ years of progressive underwriting experience within the insurance industry.
Proven leadership experience managing underwriting teams and leaders.
Strong understanding of underwriting governance, risk management, and best practices.
Experience developing and implementing underwriting guidelines, pricing frameworks, and authority structures.
Demonstrated success managing and growing profitable insurance portfolios.
Strong broker relationship management and business development skills.
Experience with budgeting, financial management, and portfolio analysis.
Ability to identify growth opportunities and execute underwriting strategies aligned to business objectives.
Strong knowledge of market trends, product development, and competitive analysis.
Executive-level communication, presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
Experience working closely with senior leadership teams and contributing to strategic business decisions.
Ability to attend regular in-person leadership and board meetings within the GTA.
Experience overseeing multiple insurance product lines or market segments.
Specialty insurance experience.
CIP, FCIP, CRM, or other relevant industry designations.
Experience launching new insurance products or product enhancements.
Experience leading underwriting transformation or process improvement initiatives.
Strong understanding of the Canadian insurance regulatory landscape.
Experience working in a growth-oriented or entrepreneurial insurance environment.
