JOB SUMMARY:
The RCMP Guard is responsible for the safe custody, care and supervision of people detained at the RCMP Detachment cellblock, ensuring prisoner security, wellbeing and compliance with RCMP policies while individuals are held pending a court hearing, return to parents, or transfer to a correctional or penal institution. The role performs a wide range of security, administrative, custodial and housekeeping duties, including completing various documents related to prisoners and ensuring the cleanliness of jail cells and the guard room. Working under general supervision, the RCMP Guard requires sound judgment, cultural sensitivity and strict adherence to safety procedures, and must be able to respond effectively to high-risk situations.
The work may involve exposure to violent or hostile individuals, unpleasant working conditions and various body fluids while supporting overall Detachment operations and performing related duties as assigned.
As a condition of employment, the incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain an RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Education and Training:
Grade 12 diploma. Basic First Aid Certificate. WHIMIS certificate.
Ability to complete all RCMP-required guard training, including Assessing Prisoner Responsiveness training, within the trial period.
Experience : Six (6) months of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proven ability to remain calm, discreet and in control when working with individuals who may be distressed, hostile or unpredictable while maintaining professionalism and respect. Physical and mental capability to perform inspections, maintain secure environments and carry out tasks requiring sustained focus, coordination and attention to detail. Strong judgment and concentration skills with the ability to assess situations, follow established procedures and respond appropriately in routine and high stress environments. Demonstrated knowledge of custodial operations, safety protocols and administrative practices related to the secure care and supervision of detained persons. The ability to accurately maintain logs, records and documentation. Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also demonstrating reliability and initiative when performing duties independently. Thorough understanding of workplace safety practices with the ability to follow safe work procedures, attend required training, report hazards and maintain qualified and technical standards. Ability to manage regular exposure to challenging working conditions while ensuring the safety of others and the integrity of custodial operations and performing related responsibilities as assigned. Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
Demonstrated experience using computerized systems, administrative tools and office technology with the ability to adapt to RCMP and City systems as required.
PAY RATE :
This is a union position with the current pay rate of $35.65 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK :
Please note: T his position is to provide extra capacity and to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief. It requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work.
