Experienced Fitter / Fabricator
Location: Toronto, ON
Position Type: Full-time
Job Summary
We are looking for a highly experienced Fitter / Fabricator who can weld, but who is first and foremost a true metal fabricator and builder.
This is not a welding-only position. We need someone who can take a drawing or a job from start to finish independently. You must be able to lay out, measure, cut, drill, punch, form, machine, fit, assemble, and weld without relying on other employees to prepare or fit the work for you.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of hands-on fitting and fabrication experience, preferably in a job shop where every day involves different materials, processes, and problem solving.
You must be comfortable using your own skills and a wide range of shop equipment, including hand and power tools, punches, mills, drills, brakes, shears, saws, grinders, and welding equipment. You should know what tools are required for a job and be comfortable setting up and using them yourself.
This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in turning raw material and a drawing into a finished product. You must understand fit-up, layout, fabrication sequence, tolerances, and how to think through an entire build from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, dimensions, and welding symbols.
- Independently build complete fabrications from drawings or specifications.
- Perform accurate layout, measuring, fitting, and assembly.
- Cut, drill, punch, form, machine, grind, fit, and prepare material as required.
- Set up and operate shop equipment and tools required to complete the job.
- Fabricate, assemble, and weld metal components using MIG, TIG, Stick,
and other appropriate processes.
- Determine the proper sequence of operations and fabrication methods without relying on others to lay out or prepare the job.
- Work with steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other materials.
- Inspect your own work throughout the fabrication process to ensure dimensions, fit, tolerances, and finished quality meet requirements.
- Troubleshoot fabrication and fit-up problems and develop practical solutions.
- Work independently while also communicating effectively with supervisors, engineers, and other team members.
- Maintain your tools and work area in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and requirements.
Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of fitting and fabrication experience, preferably in a custom job shop environment.
- Must be an experienced fitter who can build, not simply a production welder.
- Must be capable of taking a fabrication from drawing to finished product with minimal supervision.
- Strong layout, measuring, fitting, and assembly skills.
- Must be comfortable using the tools and equipment required to complete your own fabrication work.
- Proficient in MIG and TIG welding. Stick welding experience is an asset.
- Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, dimensions, and welding symbols.
- Good understanding of fabrication sequence,
tolerances, material properties, and welding processes.
- Experience working with steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced custom job shop workplace.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- High attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Welding certifications and safety training are assets.
Please do not apply if you do not meet the required fitting and fabrication experience outlined above. We are specifically looking for an experienced fitter/fabricator who can independently build from a drawing from start to finish.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with manual mills, lathes, drills, punches, press brakes, shears, and other fabrication equipment.
- Experience with one-off and custom fabrication rather than repetitive production work.
- Ability to troubleshoot and determine the best way to manufacture or repair a component.
- Ability to mentor and assist less experienced fabricators.
