Role The Assistant Deputy Minister, Financial Services and Senior Financial Officer (ADM-SFO) plays a critical leadership role in ensuring financial accountability across the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Services. This position is responsible for overseeing the ministry’s financial accountability framework and for providing high quality financial leadership and advice across the organization and related public sector agencies. Reporting to the Deputy Minister and serving as a member of the Executive Team, the ADM-SFO is a principal financial advisor to the Minister, Deputy Minister, Executive Team, and program areas, supporting financial strategy, resource management, and performance in diverse business contexts.
This role calls for a visionary leader who can foster a culture of financial stewardship and collaboration. You will champion a shared approach to financial governance and strategy while providing high-quality advice and information to support key government decision-making bodies, particularly Treasury Board and Finance. You will lead core fiscal management activities, including multi-year financial planning, budget oversight, forecasting, reporting, and internal controls.
You will also engage early with ministry leaders and business partners on initiatives with financial implications, enabling timely advice, well-developed options, and informed decision-making.
Qualifications
Your background includes significant executive leadership experience, with strengths in financial management and fiscal oversight within a large public‑sector organization. As the ideal candidate, you bring experience providing strategic advice to executive leadership in complex, multi-stakeholder environments, supported by deep expertise in financial systems, internal controls, audit, and government financial requirements.
You are attuned to emerging issues and leading practices, build trusted partnerships, strengthen organizational capacity, and foster a high-performing culture grounded in accountability and excellence. You demonstrate exceptional judgement, strategic and analytical thinking, and the ability to synthesize qualitative and quantitative information, assess risk, establish meaningful financial measures, and align decisions with government priorities. Your strong political, business, and financial acumen will complement a comprehensive understanding of ministry programs and relevant Government of Alberta legislation, policies, regulations, and Treasury Board directives.
A degree in Commerce, Business, Management, Public Administration, or a related field is required. A qualified accounting designation is also required.
Salary
$7,212.78 – $9,465.95 biweekly ($188,253.56 - $247,061.30 annually)
