Your Opportunity
We are seeking an Associate Physician (AP) to join the Foothills Medical Centre Interventional Radiology (IR) Hub. As an integral member of a highly specialized multidisciplinary team, the AP will support inpatient and outpatient IR services.
Associate
Physicians are international medical graduates registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry. Working under the direction and supervision of interventional radiologists, APs provide essential clinical support in the assessment, performance of minor image guided procedures, monitoring, and management of IR patients. This role is ideal for internationally trained physicians seeking meaningful clinical practice within a structured and supportive setting.
The AP will work closely with interventional and subspecialty radiologists and collaborate with referring surgical and medical departments (eg. general surgery, thoracic surgery, hepatology, oncology, nephrology, urology and emergency medicine). The roles and responsibilities of the AP will revolve around triage, work-up, performance of minor procedures under image guidance, and periprocedural management of inpatients and outpatients during their stay in the IR department.
Foothills Medical
Centre has maintained a successful AP program for more than 20 years and offers extensive hands-on training and mentorship from staff radiologists.
Description
Associate Physicians (APs) in the Interventional Radiology (IR) program work within a multidisciplinary team in the IR Department consisting of administrative staff, nurses, technologists and radiologists (including staff, residents and fellows). In collaboration with the interventional radiologist, the AP protocols and triages minor image guided procedures, gathers all clinical information about the patient including lab data, patient medications etc., and facilitates booking and preparation of patient for the procedure, including obtaining consent.
This may also include ordering investigations where appropriate.
Under supervision of the interventional radiologist, the AP will perform minor procedures such as image guided biopsies, para- and thoracentesis, remove central lines, and assist the radiologist in the performance of procedures where appropriate. The AP will ensure that all documentation for pathology/laboratory specimens is complete and collected and be responsible for follow-up, identification of procedural complications and periprocedural patient management. Work hours are relatively well defined with procedures largely performed and managed during day-time hours.
APs in the IR Department will have opportunities to attend educational and multidisciplinary clinical rounds and gain exposure to clinical research. APs adhere to AHS Associate Physician Terms of Reference and participate in regular reviews with designated consultants. Day‑to‑day clinical activities are overseen by the interventional radiologist.
