- Clinical Assistant (International Medical Graduate)
Location: Family Medicine Clinic Reports To: Supervising Family Physician
Position Type: Full-Time / Part time
Position Summary
The Clinical Assistant (IMG) works alongside the Family Physician to improve access, continuity, quality of care, and clinic efficiency. The Clinical Assistant supports patient care, preventive health initiatives, chronic disease management, inbox management, EMR optimization, quality improvement activities, and patient follow-up. The role is physician-supervised and does not include independent diagnosis, prescribing, or unsupervised medical decision-making.
Core Responsibilities
1. Patient Care Support
- Welcome and room patients.
- Obtain and document
- Relevant Vitals
- BMI
- Relevant screening information
- Update medication, allergy, and medical history records.
- Administer physician-approved screening tools including:
- PHQ-9/GAD-7
- Asthma/COPD/DM assessments
- Perform approved point-of-care testing including:
- Urinalysis/Blood glucose/Pregnancy/Other clinic-approved tests
- Prepare examination rooms, instruments, and equipment.
- Assist with procedures according to training and clinic protocols, including:
- Pap tests/IUD procedures/Ear syringing/ECGs
1. Preventive Care & Panel Management
- Identify patients due for:
- Screening
- Immunizations
- Diabetes reviews
- Annual preventive visits
- Contact patients and coordinate appointments.
- Maintain preventive care and chronic disease registries.
- Support physician panel growth.
1. Inbox & EMR Management
- Review incoming:
- Specialist letters
- Hospital reports
- Laboratory results
- Imaging reports
- External correspondence
- Categorize and attach documents appropriately within the EMR.
- Prepare concise summaries of incoming reports.
- Flag urgent, abnormal, or time-sensitive items for physician review.
- Draft proposed actions and follow-up plans for physician approval.
- Track specialist recommendations and ensure follow-up tasks are completed.
- Assist with chart maintenance, problem lists, and preventive care tracking.
1. Chronic Disease Management
Under physician-approved protocols:
- Conduct diabetes follow-up reviews.
- Support hypertension monitoring.
- Assist with COPD and asthma management programs.
- Provide smoking cessation support.
- Support weight management and lifestyle programs.
- Track investigations, referrals, and follow-up requirements.
1. Vaccination & Treatment Clinics
Where qualifications, delegation, and regulations permit:
- Administer vaccines.
- Monitor patients after immunization.
- Administer physician-ordered injections.
- Maintain vaccine inventory and cold-chain records.
- Support seasonal vaccination campaigns.
1. Quality Improvement & Billing Support
- Identify preventive care gaps and opportunities.
- Support CCM and panel-management initiatives.
- Assist with billing preparation and reconciliation.
- Monitor rejected claims and prepare correction reports.
- Generate EMR reports relating to:
- Patient panel size
- Recall performance
- Preventive care indicators
- Chronic disease registries
- Participate in quality-improvement projects and workflow optimization.
Qualifications
Required
- Medical degree (MBBS, MD, MBChB, or equivalent).
- International Medical Graduate status.
- Strong clinical knowledge and medical documentation skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- High level of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively under physician supervision.
Preferred
- Experience in family medicine, primary care, emergency medicine, or internal medicine.
- Experience reviewing laboratory and diagnostic reports.
- Familiarity with Ontario healthcare systems.
- Experience with Avaros, Accuro, OSCAR, PS Suite, or similar EMRs.
- Knowledge of preventive care programs and chronic disease management.
- Understanding of OHIP billing processes.

- Inbox turnaround time.

- Billing accuracy and reduction in rejected claims.

Pay: $20.00-$23.00 per hour
