Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Must have D.V.M. and be eligible for licensing in Manitoba.
EXPERIENCE:
- One full year working with laboratory animals and one year of large animal experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of Canadian Council on Animal Care Guidelines an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skill in handling and restraint of various species of animals, as well as diagnosis and treatment of a variety of species is required.
- Good surgical skills, blood collection techniques and other standard veterinary techniques are required.
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal, are required.
- Ability to interpret and formulate feedback/articulate key messages is required.
- Ability to use inclusive, respectful language in all communication is required.
- Ability to carry out all aspects of the position with a high degree of tact, confidentiality, diplomacy, discretion and professionalism is required.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision is required.

Key responsibilities
- Acts as a resource to and participates in the activities of the Animal Care Committees including protocol review, facility and laboratory inspections.
- Assists in animal use protocol review and participates in the activities of the Animal Care Committees, keeping abreast of new research techniques, including the 3 Rs (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement), and settling humane endpoints.
- Will be involved in the ethical review of all animal based research activities through the review of the animal use protocol.
- Attends committee meetings in a scheduled rotation with the other clinical veterinarian(s).
- Reviews proposed amendments to animal use protocols as well as annual renewals.
- Participates in annual facility and laboratory inspections.
- Acts as a professionally qualified veterinarian providing clinical care for all laboratory animals used in research, teaching and testing at the University of Manitoba.
- Participates in routine observation of animals as well as treatment of individual clinical cases.
- Participation in a rotating on call schedule, providing clinical care coverage outside of regular business hours (evenings, nights, weekends and holidays) is required.
- As part of the Veterinary Services team, assists the DACUP and PAM Coordinator in the post-approval monitoring of compliance of research activities with approved protocols.
- Acts as delegated the authority to stop any objectionable procedure if it is considered that unnecessary distress or pain is being experienced by an animal, stop immediately any use of animals which deviates from the approved use, any non-approved procedure, or any procedure causing unforeseen pain or distress to animals, and humanely kill an animal if pain or distress caused to the animal is not part of the approved Protocol and cannot be alleviated.
- Acts as delegated authority to treat, remove from a study or euthanize, if necessary, an animal according to the veterinarian’s professional judgement.
- Acts as a resource for researchers in regards to protocol submission as it relates to: anesthesia, analgesia, surgery and endpoints.
- Acts as a resource for researchers by providing pre-review of protocols and advising on analgesia, anesthesia, surgical procedures and humane endpoints.
- May also be asked by researcher/research staff to perform and/or train staff in surgery and other technical procedures such as blood collection, tissue collection, etc.
- Assists in maintaining and monitoring the established quality control programs for disease surveillance in animal colonies.
- Specific duties may include but are not limited to: performing post mortem examinations, interpreting laboratory test results, reviewing and updating procedures for colony/herd health maintenance, etc.
- Will serve on various university committees such as the Local Animal User Committees, Education Sub-Committee, and facility design committees.
- As part of the Veterinary Services team, assists the DACUP and Lab Animal Training Coordinator in the development and delivery of the university’s Animal User Training Program and associated training labs, including assistance with instruction of students in specific training labs.
- Assists in ensuring compliance with all federal, provincial and university regulations as well as with the standards set forth by the Canadian Council on Animal Care, the International Transport Association and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) of Canada and the United States via regular, self-directed review of any current and updated information from these organizations.
- Other duties as assigned.

This is an in-person position located at the Fort Garry campus, and involves travel to the Bannatyne campus, as well as the Glenlea Research Station. The incumbent will share on call nights, weekends, and holidays with the other Clinical Veterinarian, and the Director of Animal Care & Vet Services.
