Title: Community Advocate
Department: Advocacy Program – Community Development
Status: Term Full Time (March 31, 2027)
Pay Grid:Salary Range 3 ($50,480.00 to $66,255.00 per year)
Reporting to: Community Advocate Team Lead
Summary of Duties:
Under the direction of the Community Advocate Team Lead, the Community Advocate will support nation members in navigating and accessing programs and services across local, provincial, and federal systems, while also contributing to community outreach, advocacy, and administrative coordination.
Key Deliverables and Expectations:
- Provide direct assistance to community members in completing forms and applications, either electronically or by hand, including but not limited to CPP, OAS, GIS, CPPD, EI, Wills & Estates, Class Action claims, and all tax-related matters (e.g., annual tax returns).
- Support clients with all band-related forms or processes such as housing, lands, financial literacy, employment and training, and matters requiring Commissioner of Oaths services.
- Advocate for and assist individuals in navigating complex local, provincial, and federal systems and services, including government benefits, health services, housing, education, and legal documentation.
- Identify and follow up on client-raised concerns by collaborating with relevant staff and departments to ensure effective and timely resolutions.
- Act as a liaison with key internal departments (e.g., Housing, Elders, Youth, Finance) and external agencies (e.g.,
- Jordan’s Principle, FNHA, CLBC, Service Canada) to ensure coordinated and comprehensive support for clients.
- Promote and facilitate community engagement through outreach activities, pop-up events, workshops, clinics, and information sessions.
- Organize and support government outreach events such as Services Canada or CRA clinics, and other resource-based community events.
- Provide small business support to community members, including basic guidance on business documentation, taxes, and bookkeeping.
- Assist in managing daily administrative responsibilities, including Navigator Inbox, tracking client cases, and maintaining accurate records.
- Support conflict navigation by guiding community members to appropriate resources, programs, or team members as needed.
- Uphold a high standard of professionalism, confidentiality, and documentation in all client interactions and service delivery.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including occasional inter-departmental support.
Experience and Attributes:
- Administration University degree or certificate equivalent issued by a recognized learning institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills, with meticulous attention to detail and effective time management.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and accountability.
- Qualified demeanor in all interactions with stakeholders, clients, and community members.
- Commissioner of Oaths certification or willingness to obtain.
- Small business knowledge or willingness to obtain.
- Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally safe service delivery when working with vulnerable or marginalized populations.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, Indigenous history, community dynamics, and cultural protocols relevant to Lil’wat Nation.
- Comfort with using digital tools such as online portals, PDF forms, or service request platforms to assist clients.
- Must be able to provide a clear Criminal Record Check, including the Vulnerable Sector.
