Community Support Worker / Health Care Aide – Complex 1:1 Care

Vernon, BC | Part-Time/Casual | $27.00–$31.00/hour

We are looking for the right person to join a small, established team providing one-to-one support for a bright, engaging young woman who is nonverbal, neurodivergent, and has complex physical and seizure-related care needs.

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

This is a hands-on, active position. You must be comfortable with:

- Personal care, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and assistance with eating
- Seizure care and changing levels of physical support
- Walking, mobility, positioning, transfers, and mechanical lift equipment when needed
- Supporting someone who communicates nonverbally
- Swimming and community activities
- Working in a private family home with a service dog and two cats
- Working primarily Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays

Her needs can change significantly throughout the day. At times she may be walking and actively participating in her day. Following seizure activity, she may require a much higher level of physical assistance and personal care. We need someone who is comfortable with both sides of the job: complex hands-on care AND supporting an active, meaningful life.

About Her

She is a bright and engaging young woman who communicates nonverbally. She has clear preferences, a excellent sense of humour, and meaningful relationships with the people who know her well.

Nonverbal does not mean she doesn’t understand. The right person will take the time to learn her communication, recognize her cues, respect her choices, and build a genuine relationship with her.

She enjoys therapeutic horseback riding, adaptive skiing, swimming one to two times per week, community activities, and spending time with friends and family.

We believe the best support comes from building genuine relationships, respecting individual choice, and focusing on a person’s strengths rather than limitations.

What You’ll Do

- Provide personal care and support with daily routines

- Follow individualized seizure care and safety protocols
- Assist with walking, mobility, transfers, positioning, and mechanical lifts when required
- Support medications, meals, and eating
- Support swimming, therapeutic horseback riding, appointments, recreation, outings, and social activities
- Learn and respond to her individual nonverbal communication
- Encourage choice, independence, participation, and social connection
- Complete care-related household tasks and daily documentation
- Communicate and work collaboratively with family and the support team

Who We’re Looking For You may have experience as a Health Care Aide, Community Support Worker, Disability Support Worker, Rehabilitation Assistant, Education Assistant, or in another related support role.

We’re looking for someone who is:

- Calm, patient, observant, and dependable
- Comfortable with hands-on care and changing support needs
- Physically capable of assisting with mobility and transfers
- Interested in neurodivergence and nonverbal communication
- Able to adapt and think on their feet
- Open to feedback and willing to learn
- Able to work independently after training while also being part of a team
- Respectful of autonomy, privacy, family dynamics, and boundaries
- Interested in meaningful, longer-term work

Individualized training will be provided for her specific communication, routines, equipment, seizure protocols, and care needs.

Requirements

- Relevant caregiving/support experience or education preferred
- Current First Aid/CPR
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract
- Comfortable driving in the community

- Comfortable working around a service dog and two cats
- Criminal Record Check
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
