Job Summary

Your work has taught you how to support people through complex situations with patience, sound judgement, and respect. Teaching gives you the opportunity to share that experience with adults preparing to work in community services.

We are seeking an experienced community-services skilled to teach our 6 months Community Support Worker program in Kelowna. The program prepares students to support people experiencing mental health challenges, substance use issues, concurrent disorders, autism, ADHD, trauma, and social barriers within a non-clinical scope of practice.

The Opportunity

This is a part-time position with a minimum of 25 hours per week. You will be teaching from a fully developed curriculum that includes daily lesson plans, presentation materials, and assessment. You will help adult learners connect theory with practical community-support skills while reinforcing ethical practice, clear documentation, professional boundaries, and personal safety.

Preparation time and other academic duties will be discussed as part of the role arrangement.

What you will teach

- Introduction to community support work, professional practice, ethics, and documentation
- Mental health foundations and mental health across the lifespan
- Addictions, substance use, concurrent disorders, and harm reduction
- Autism, ADHD, neurodiversity, and neurodiversity-affirming support
- Trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, and Indigenous perspectives in community care
- Outreach, community engagement, community resources, referrals, advocacy, and basic case management
- Legal and policy frameworks in British Columbia
- Crisis intervention, de-escalation, suicide awareness, emergency response, and safety-focused practice
- Self-care, professional resilience, job search, and resume preparation
- Work experience expectations and readiness for community-service settings





What you will do

- Deliver clear classroom and online instruction aligned with the approved curriculum and learning outcomes
- Use practical examples, case discussions, demonstrations, and structured activities to connect course concepts with community practice
- Create or adapt lesson materials, review activities, assignments, quizzes, exams, projects, and skills assessments
- Evaluate student learning consistently and provide timely, constructive feedback and individual support
- Maintain accurate attendance, grade, assessment, and student-progress records
- Promote a respectful and inclusive learning workplace grounded in person-centred, trauma-informed, culturally safe, and neurodiversity-affirming practice
- Teach and model confidentiality, informed consent, professional boundaries, documentation, ethical decision-making, and accountability
- Help students prepare for work experience and collaborate with academic and administrative colleagues on student progress and program quality

Minimum qualifications Candidates must meet one of the following qualification routes:

Route 1 - Credential and experience: A relevant post-secondary credential in social work, community support, human services, mental health and addictions, developmental services, psychology, counselling, or a closely related field, plus at least two years of recent, relevant occupational experience.

Route 2 - Extensive occupational experience: At least ten years of full-time,



relevant occupational experience demonstrating practical knowledge, professional responsibility, and competence in community or social services.

The successful candidate must also be able to teach the assigned subject matter safely, accurately, and within their professional competence.

Strong assets

- Current or recent experience in mental health, addictions, community outreach, supportive housing, crisis services, developmental services, or another relevant community setting
- Experience teaching, training, precepting, mentoring, orienting, or supervising others
- Education or professional development in adult learning, assessment, or instructional design
- Comfort using common office applications, video conference software, online learning tools, a learning management system, and a student information system
- Strong organization, communication, documentation, and student-support skills

Compensation and schedule The hourly range is CA$25.00 to CA$32.00, based on qualifications and relevant experience. The position is part-time with a minimum of 25 hours per week in Kelowna, BC. The program uses combined in-class and distance delivery. Preparation time and related academic duties will be discussed with the successful candidate.
