Director of Finance – 3PL / Distribution

Location: Greater Toronto Area

Work Environment: On-site

Industry: Third-Party Logistics (3PL) / Transportation / Distribution The Opportunity

Our client, an established and growing third-party logistics organization in the Greater Toronto Area, is looking for an experienced Director of Finance to join its leadership team.

This is a hands-on senior finance position for someone who enjoys being close to the business. In addition to leading the accounting and finance function, the Director of Finance will work closely with operations, transportation, sales, and senior leadership to improve financial performance, strengthen reporting, and provide greater visibility into costs and profitability.

The successful candidate will bring strong financial leadership along with an understanding of the operational side of a logistics, transportation, or distribution business.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Reporting

- Lead the day-to-day accounting and finance function and provide direction to the finance team.
- Oversee financial reporting, general ledger activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and period-end closing.
- Deliver timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting process and maintain ongoing cash flow projections.
- Analyze business performance, operating expenses, customer profitability, and gross margins.
- Provide senior leadership with meaningful financial analysis to support business decisions.
- Maintain appropriate financial controls, policies, and processes.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, financial institutions, tax professionals, and other external partners.

Commercial Finance & Profitability
- Work closely with operational and commercial teams to understand the financial performance of customers, lanes, services, and contracts.
- Provide financial oversight related to transportation costs, pricing, and margin performance.
- Review costing information and identify areas where profitability can be improved.
- Support pricing decisions, customer proposals, bids, and contract renewals.
- Develop reporting that provides greater visibility into customer and operational profitability.




- Help establish consistent processes for reviewing pricing, costs, and margins.

Business & Operational Partnership
- Partner with Operations and Transportation leaders to ensure financial information accurately reflects business activity.
- Provide financial guidance on operational decisions, service costs, and customer requirements.
- Work with Sales on the financial components of new business opportunities and customer agreements.
- Develop and monitor KPIs related to financial and operational performance.
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities and translate financial data into practical recommendations for the leadership team.

Payroll, Compliance & Risk
- Provide oversight of payroll administration and related reporting requirements.
- Ensure appropriate remittances, tax filings, and regulatory requirements are completed accurately and on time.
- Maintain strong financial documentation and ensure the organization remains audit-ready.
- Monitor areas of financial and operational risk and ensure appropriate controls are in place.

Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Coach, develop, and support members of the finance team.
- Evaluate existing financial processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting.
- Support improvements to accounting, transportation, and business systems.
- Participate in system implementations and integrations, with a focus on data integrity and effective financial reporting.
- Introduce tools, reporting, and automation that provide leadership with better and faster business information.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Progressive experience in accounting and financial leadership within 3PL, transportation, logistics, distribution, or a similar operational environment .
- Solid understanding of financial reporting,



budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and internal controls.
- Experience analyzing costing, margins, pricing, and profitability within an operational business.
- Previous experience leading and developing a finance or accounting team.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting and ERP systems.
- Exposure to transportation management systems (TMS) or other logistics technology is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting system implementations, integrations, or finance process improvements is an asset.
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.

The Ideal Candidate You are a finance leader who wants to understand why the numbers look the way they do , not simply report them.

You are comfortable moving between financial statements and operational conversations and can work collaboratively with Operations, Sales, and senior leadership. You understand the importance of costing and margin visibility in a high-volume logistics environment and can turn financial information into practical business decisions.

This opportunity is well suited to someone who has built their career within a 3PL, transportation, logistics, distribution, or similarly fast-paced operational business and is looking for a role where Finance has a meaningful seat at the table.
