EXCAVATOR OPERATOR
Nelson Environmental Remediation Ltd. – Earthworks Division
Nelson Environmental Remediation is looking for an experienced Excavator Operator to join our Earthworks Division.
Our crews work on a variety of environmental remediation, environmental construction, excavation, and demolition projects throughout Alberta and, occasionally, beyond.
This position is best suited to an experienced operator who takes pride in operating and caring for their equipment, works safely around people and existing infrastructure, and understands the importance of doing the job right.
THE ROLE The Excavator Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators on a variety of environmental and earthworks projects.
The work may include
- Excavation and backfilling
- Environmental remediation
- Demolition
- Underground storage tank (UST) removal
- Loading and material handling
- Site preparation and earthworks
- Working around utilities and existing infrastructure
- Supporting other site activities as required
Operators with experience on additional heavy equipment are encouraged to apply. Depending on project requirements, operators may also be required to operate dozers, loaders, rock trucks, packers, or other equipment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely and efficiently operate excavators on active client sites.
- Perform excavation, backfill, demolition, UST removal, and general earthworks.
- Follow project plans, site instructions, grades, and direction from the Site Supervisor or Project Manager.
- Operate equipment safely around ground crews, utilities, structures, and other site hazards.
- Complete daily equipment inspections.
- Clean and maintain equipment and report mechanical issues or required repairs.
- Perform minor equipment maintenance as required.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and other site safety activities.
- Follow Nelson and client safety policies, procedures, and site requirements.
- Work cooperatively with supervisors, labourers, equipment operators, and other project personnel.
- Assist with general site duties when required.
EQUIPMENT EXPERIENCE Excavator experience is required.
Experience operating additional equipment is an asset, including:
- Dozer
- Finish/Grading Equipment
- Rock Truck
- Packer
- Loader
The ability to operate multiple types of equipment may provide opportunities to work across a variety of Nelson projects.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Previous excavator operating experience required.
- Excavation and backfill experience required.
- Previous environmental remediation and/or demolition experience is an asset.
- Heavy equipment operating experience.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance.
- Ground Disturbance Level II.
- First Aid/CPR.
- WHMIS 2015.
- H2S Alive.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently while working on active client sites.
- Strong safety awareness and a team-oriented attitude.
- Willingness to travel throughout Alberta and potentially beyond.
- Willingness to work overtime as project requirements dictate.
Additional training will be provided as required.
WHAT NELSON OFFERS
- Full time employment with opportunities for permanent or temporary project work.
- Competitive wages based on experience.
- Overtime pay after 8 hours per day or 44 hours per week, excluding travel time.
- Per diem when working away from home.

TRAVEL & WORK SCHEDULE This position will require travel throughout Alberta and potentially beyond depending on project requirements.
Candidates must be willing to work away from home when required and work overtime to meet project schedules.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Safety is a fundamental part of how we work at Nelson. Employees are expected to follow Nelson and client safety requirements and actively participate in our safety program.
While required PPE is provided, the successful candidate must have CSA-approved safety boots.
Employees requiring prescription safety glasses are responsible for obtaining their own prescription safety eyewear.
