This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position paying $21.25 per hour and requiring 3 hours per week. The program takes place every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for 25 weeks per year, with an additional hour of preparation time each week. Consistent availability during the program hours is required.

Are you passionate about working with young children and supporting immigrant families? The Grande Prairie Council for Lifelong Learning (GPCLL) is seeking a part-time childminder to join our Teaching Parent, Family Literacy Program.

At GPCLL, we provide adult literacy programs and services that help individuals and families achieve their learning goals. We strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment in our programs, promoting a sense of belonging, encouragement, and positive reinforcement as learners improve their English skills and gain essential knowledge for successful settlement and community integration.

Position Summary The Family Literacy Childminder supports the delivery of Family Literacy programming by providing a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment for children while their parents or caregivers participate in adult learning. Working collaboratively with program staff, the Childminder provides attentive supervision and age-appropriate, literacy-rich activities that support children’s well-being, positive engagement, and enjoyment of learning.

Key Responsibilities

Child Supervision and Safety

· Provide continuous and attentive supervision of children participating in Family Literacy programming.

· Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming child-minding environment.

· Monitor program areas for potential hazards and address or report concerns promptly.

· Follow organizational procedures related to child safety, emergencies, incidents, health and safety, and confidentiality.

· Support safe arrival, participation, and transition of children during programming.

· Communicate concerns regarding a child’s safety, behaviour, health, or well-being to the appropriate program staff.

Literacy-Rich Activities and Engagement

· Engage children in developmentally appropriate activities such as stories, songs, rhymes, crafts, conversation, imaginative play, and hands-on learning.





· Encourage positive experiences with language, books, communication, and learning through play.

· Prepare and organize appropriate toys, books, activities, and learning materials.

· Support children’s social and emotional development through encouragement, positive communication, and gentle redirection.

· Adapt activities and interactions to meet the varying ages, abilities, interests, languages, and needs of participating children.

Program Support

· Work collaboratively with the Family Literacy facilitator and other program staff to support the overall delivery of the program.

· Assist with the setup and takedown of child-minding and activity areas.

· Clean and sanitize toys, equipment, surfaces, and materials as required.

· Purchase and organize healthy, age-appropriate snacks for the Family Literacy program, following organizational guidelines and any known allergy, dietary, and food-safety requirements.

· Maintain attendance records and other program documentation as assigned.

· Provide appropriate observations or information to support program planning and evaluation.

· Participate in staff meetings, orientation, training, and career development as required.

· Perform other related duties as assigned in support of program delivery.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Previous experience working with children in childcare, early learning, education, family programming, recreation, or a related setting.





· Early Childhood Education training or related education is considered an asset.

· Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse families is considered an asset.

· Previous experience in Family Literacy programming is considered an asset.

Knowledge and Skills

· Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate activities.

· Ability to supervise children safely and attentively.

· Ability to use positive behaviour guidance and gentle redirection.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

· Strong organizational skills and attention to safety.

· Ability to adapt to changing program needs and varying numbers and ages of children.

· Respect for cultural diversity and differing family experiences.

· Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and lifelong learning.

Other Requirements

· Satisfactory Police Information Check, Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, or other required security screening.

· First Aid and CPR certification is considered an asset or may be required depending on program assignment.

· Willingness to complete organizational and program-related training and professional development as required.

Working Conditions

· Work is primarily completed during scheduled Family Literacy programming.

· Hours may vary based on program schedules, enrolment, and organizational needs.

· The position requires frequent interaction with young children and families.

· Duties may include prolonged standing or sitting, working at floor level, bending, lifting program materials, and setting up or moving toys and equipment.

· The Childminder must remain alert and actively supervise children throughout program delivery.

· Depending on program assignment, work may take place at GPCLL or at community partner locations.

Reporting Relationship The Family Literacy Childminder reports to the Programs Manager and works collaboratively with Family Literacy facilitators and other members of the program team.
