About the Role
Are you a mature, grounded, and experienced aquatics qualified with a genuine passion for guiding young children; specifically infants and toddlers under three years old; toward becoming water safe?
At British Swim School, our mission is to teach water survival skills and help swimmers of all ages become safe, confident swimmers. We are seeking a mature, highly experienced part-time Aquatic Team Leader to build, onboard, and develop an exceptional instructional team from the ground up, while driving program development and overseeing daily pool operations across our Halton locations. This is a pivotal role designed for an established aquatics professional who can deliver warm, compassionate instruction to our youngest swimmers while taking ownership of creating, mentoring, and growing our instructor roster throughout the region.
You will serve as the foundation of our deck operations; responsible for recruiting support, onboarding, training, mentoring, and building a high-performing team of British Swim School instructors. While this is a team-building and leadership role, you must be someone who loves being in the water: you will lead by example, conduct hands-on coaching, teach survival-first classes, and step in directly whenever needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Building & Development: Lead the effort to recruit, onboard, train, and mentor new swim instructors, establishing a culture of excellence, teamwork, and accountability as our instructor team grows.
- Multi-Location Program Development: Travel across all British Swim School pool locations within the Halton Region to establish class quality, train new staff, refine program standards, and ensure brand consistency across all sites.
- Infant & Early-Years Survival Instruction: Deliver structured, high-quality swimming lessons tailored for children under the age of three using British Swim School's methodology, helping infants and toddlers build foundational water survival skills (such as back floating), gain confidence, and reach vital swimming milestones.
- Training & Quality Assurance: Lead the onboarding, shadowing, and mentored training process for all new instructors to ensure strict adherence to British Swim School's curriculum and safety standards. Get into the water to demonstrate handling techniques, co-teach, and evaluate new instructors.
- Safety & Operations: Continuously monitor pool areas for safety hazards, enforce rules to prevent accidents, and maintain overall facility cleanliness and proper water conditions across sites.
- Emergency Response: Act as a lead responder in emergency situations with total composure,
administering first aid or CPR-C when necessary.
- Customer & Program Support: Act as the primary point of contact for parents, carers, and young swimmers on the deck; addressing feedback, celebrating milestones, and building a welcoming, trusting environment.
Schedule & Hours This position is a core part-time leadership role with set weekly hours totaling up to 20 hours per week:
- Operating Days: Wednesday through Sunday (Mondays and Tuesdays off).
- Wednesday – Friday: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
- Saturday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Skills & Qualifications
- Maturity & Reliability: A grounded, patient, and professional individual who works well independently, leads by example, and remains calm under pressure during emergency situations.
- Passion for Early Childhood Development: A big heart and high comfort level working with infants and children under three years old, supporting both the child and their parent/carer in the pool.
- Team-Building Capabilities: Proven ability or strong passion for coaching, onboarding, and mentoring new team members to build a strong cohesive group of instructors from the ground up.
- Mobility & Reliability: Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel to all British Swim School locations across the Halton region (Burlington, Oakville, Milton, etc.) to develop pool teams and support program growth.
- Deep Swimming Expertise: Exceptional swimming ability with absolute confidence in advanced water safety, child handling, and infant safety practices.
- Strong Communication Skills: Outstanding interpersonal skills to mentor staff, connect warmly with infants and young children, and communicate professionally with parents.
- Physical & Schedule Flexibility: Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for equipment setup/maintenance, along with the flexibility to work part-time shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Required Certifications & Checks:
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification.
- Recognized Swim Instructor Certification (or equivalent teaching experience).
- Lifeguard Certification preferred: if you do not currently hold a Lifeguard Certification but are willing to complete it, British Swim School will support you through the certification process.
- Successful Vulnerable Sector Check (Police Check) prior to start.
Comprehensive Teacher Training & Support At British Swim School, we invest heavily in our leaders! If selected, you will receive full support in gaining necessary certifications as well as structured, step-by-step training on our specialized curriculum so you can effectively train others:
