Family Managed Care

Calgary

About the Position

We are a private family in SW Calgary seeking a compassionate, dependable, and experienced Home Care Nurse to provide one-on-one care for an adult family member recovering from a significant stroke.

He has made progress in his recovery, and our goal is to continue helping him improve his mobility, independence, confidence, and overall quality of life.

This role involves hands-on personal care as well as rehabilitation-focused support. We are looking for someone who understands the importance of providing assistance when needed while also patiently encouraging the client to participate in daily activities and do as much as he safely can independently.

This is a long-term private home-care opportunity where you will work consistently with one client and become familiar with his routines, needs, abilities, and recovery goals.

Responsibilities

- Provide attentive one-on-one care in a private family home
- Assist with activities of daily living, including dressing, grooming and personal hygiene
- Provide incontinence care, including changing continence products as required
- Assist with toileting and bowel/bladder care as needed
- Maintain appropriate hygiene, comfort and dignity during all personal-care activities
- Monitor skin condition and help prevent irritation or pressure-related concerns
- Assist with safe mobility, walking, positioning and transfers
- Encourage the client to participate in personal care and daily activities as independently as safely possible
- Support exercises, mobility activities and rehabilitation routines recommended by his health-care providers
- Help establish and maintain routines that support continued recovery and independence
- Provide medication reminders or assistance within the caregiver's appropriate scope
- Prepare or assist with meals and encourage appropriate nutrition and hydration
- Provide companionship, conversation and meaningful social interaction
- Observe changes in the client's health, mobility, behaviour or functional abilities and communicate concerns to the family
- Accompany the client to appointments or activities when required
- Maintain a safe, clean, positive and respectful care environment
- Communicate regularly with the family regarding care, observations and progress
- Participate in training and guidance provided by the client’s physiotherapists, physicians, and other health-care professionals
- Follow recommended mobility, exercise, positioning, and rehabilitation routines
- Communicate observations and progress to the family and, where appropriate,

support continuity with the client’s health-care team

Training and Clinical Support Specialized training will be provided based on our family member’s care and rehabilitation needs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to receive guidance from members of his health-care team, including physiotherapists and physicians, regarding appropriate mobility support, exercises, positioning, rehabilitation goals, and other aspects of his care.

We are looking for someone who is willing to learn, follow qualified recommendations, and apply that guidance consistently during day-to-day care.

Qualifications

Applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

- Be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensed or eligible to practise in Alberta; or
- Be an internationally educated nurse with a recognized nursing degree who is actively working toward nursing registration in Alberta, including candidates pursuing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Stroke recovery
- Neurological conditions
- Rehabilitation
- Mobility and transfer assistance
- Home health care
- Long-term care
- Personal care
- Incontinence care
- One-on-one nursing or caregiving

Candidates must be comfortable providing hands-on personal care, including incontinence care, hygiene assistance and mobility support. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is:

- Compassionate, patient and respectful
- Reliable and dependable
- Comfortable working independently in a private-home environment
- Encouraging and motivated to help a client become more independent
- Able to balance providing assistance with allowing the client time to attempt tasks himself
- Observant and able to identify changes in health or functional ability
- Comfortable communicating openly with family members
- Proactive and able to take initiative
- Interested in developing a consistent, long-term relationship with one client and family

Current First Aid and CPR/BLS certification is preferred. Previous stroke or rehabilitation experience is an asset but is not required for an otherwise strong nursing candidate.

Opportunity for Internationally Educated Nurses

We particularly welcome applications from internationally educated nurses who are currently working toward nursing registration in Alberta.

Previous contractors in this role have used the opportunity to gain Canadian patient-care and home-care experience while completing the requirements for their nursing registration.

When the client's care needs have been completed and there is appropriate downtime during a shift, previous contractors have also been able to use some of that time to study for their nursing registration and licensing requirements.

Previous contractors have later moved into nursing positions and were able to use the Canadian health-care experience gained through this role as part of their professional experience.

We understand that the registration process can take time and are supportive of internationally educated nurses who are actively working toward registration with the CRNA.

Our Approach to Care

Our goal is not simply to have someone complete tasks for our family member.

A major priority for our family is helping him continue progressing toward greater independence following his stroke.

We are looking for someone who understands when assistance is necessary and when it is beneficial to patiently encourage him to try an activity himself.

Someone with a genuine interest in rehabilitation, mobility, independence and quality of life would be an especially good fit for this position.
