Public Works Operator Organization: Township of Assiginack

Position: Public Works

Operator Status: Permanent, Full-Time (Existing Vacancy)

Department: Public Works

Reports To: Public Works Superintendent

Wage Range: $28.59 – $35.74 per hour (approx. $59,463 – $74,329 annually based on 40 hours/week)

Primary Purpose

The Public Works Operator plays a critical role in the maintenance and upkeep of the Township’s infrastructure, ensuring the secure and efficient operation of roads, facilities, and municipal equipment. This position is responsible for executing regular and seasonal maintenance tasks, operating heavy equipment, and responding to emergent infrastructure issues. The Operator supports a wide range of duties that contribute to public safety, service delivery, and the preservation of Township assets. Strong technical skills, reliability, and a commitment to health and safety are essential in this role.

Key Accountabilities

Roads and Infrastructure Maintenance

- Perform year-round road maintenance including snow plowing, sanding, salting, and cutting of ice and snowbanks.
- Conduct routine and emergency repairs to roads, culverts, ditches, and surface areas.
- Complete tasks such as patching, washout repair, dust suppression, and aggregate spreading.
- Install and remove Township docks, signage, and barricades as needed.
- Support water and wastewater line repairs and emergency responses under supervision.
- Assist with playground and recreational facility maintenance.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

- Operate municipal vehicles and equipment including plows, loaders, graders, tractors,



and related machinery.
- Conduct regular inspections and basic repairs to equipment and tools.
- Load, haul, and spread materials using Township fleet equipment in a safe and compliant manner.

Waste Management Support

- Participate in garbage and recycling pickup and landfill or recycling depot operations when required.
- Provide coverage and operational support to the landfill site during staff absences or emergencies.

Health, Safety, and Public Service

- Adhere to all health and safety protocols and participate in safety training and inspections.
- Set up and monitor traffic control during roadwork (e.g., signage, cones, flagging operations).
- Provide professional and courteous service to residents when performing publicfacing tasks.
- Maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and technical performance across all work areas.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.

Willingness to complete relevant training and certifications, such as Working at Heights, WHMIS, or landfill safety.

Licensing:

Valid DZ driver’s license required, or willingness to obtain within a defined timeframe (Township support available).

Experience:

At least 1–2 years’ experience in public works, construction, roads maintenance,



or heavy equipment operation.

Familiarity with snow removal, road repairs, or utility work is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Strong understanding of municipal infrastructure and public works practices.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment.
- Physically capable of lifting, outdoor labour, and working in varied weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Clear communication skills and professionalism when interacting with the public.

Working Environment and Hours

Working Conditions:

Primarily outdoor work across municipal roads, parks, water systems, and waste sites.

Work includes scheduled weekends, evenings, and mandatory on-call shifts during winter storms or infrastructure emergencies.

Physical & Sensory Demands

High physical demand involving frequent heavy lifting, operating heavy equipment, and exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and dust.
