About Harvest Manitoba
Harvest Manitoba (“Harvest”) is a charitable organization dedicated to nourishing our communities and our sense of community so that no Manitoban goes hungry. We collect and share 13 million pounds of food every year, which is sorted and packed and distributed to Manitobans through our Community Food Network of more than 380 food banks and agencies in Winnipeg, rural, northern and First Nations communities. Right now, we feed 108,000 Manitobans every month, 49% are children.

Job Type: Part-Time (24- 28 hours per week) – 12 Months Term

Manitoba is a community focused organization committed to fighting hunger and alleviating food insecurity across our Province. As our Kitchen Coordinator, you will bring the Community Kitchen to life: preparing a light continental breakfast and lunch shared on-site with volunteers, trainees, and staff, and supporting the food security work at the heart of our mission. You will also help lead kitchen training programs, including Safe Food Handling certification, so others can build skills and confidence in the kitchen too.
Reports to: Director of Community Programs
Key Responsibilities
- Meal Preparation: Prepare a light continental breakfast, lunch, and to-go meals for volunteers, trainees, and staff.
- Community Building: Create a warm, welcoming space where meals are shared and community is built around the table.
- Menu Planning: Plan menus with a focus on making the most of food from our warehouse, keeping variety, nutrition, and cost in mind.
- Dietary & Allergen Management: Manage allergens and dietary restrictions thoughtfully, including proper labeling and cross-contamination prevention,
while being mindful of cultural and religious needs across a diverse group of volunteers and trainees.
- Kitchen & Food Safety: Keep the kitchen and eating areas clean, organized, and running to the highest health and safety standards; maintain food safety logs and documentation to support health inspections and compliance.
- Training Delivery: Support and help deliver kitchen training programs, including Safe Food Handling certification, knife skills, and other hands-on workshops, using a mix of instructional formats such as demos, group discussion, videos, and lectures.
- Food Security & Partnerships: Support our broader food security work by connecting kitchen operations to the needs of the community we serve; coordinate with the Community Food Network on food sourcing and programming; act as a point of contact for community partners, donors, or funders visiting or touring the kitchen.
- Reporting: Input and prepare data for weekly and monthly reporting.
- Volunteer Support: Train, schedule, and support key volunteers, helping them feel confident and valued in their roles; recruit new volunteers to help grow kitchen programming.
- Inventory & Waste: Monitor food inventory, help manage ordering or stock rotation, and minimize food waste through food rescue and surplus management.
- As a member of the Harvest Manitoba CREW, support the team however needed to ensure operational needs are met.
About You:
- You believe in the dignity and potential of every person and approach your work with empathy and respect.
- You have an interest in, or experience with, issues related to food insecurity (an asset in connecting with our mission).
- Three to five years’ experience cooking and preparing meals in a commercial kitchen.
- Ability to work/excel in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and effective multi-tasking is essential.
- Experience in facilitation and teaching diverse groups of people, with a proven ability to engage adult learners.
- Certified (or trainable) as a trainer in kitchen skills and Safe Food Handling.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., and stand for extended periods as needed for the job.
- You are willing to undergo and provide a explicit Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
