Polaris Youth Development Inc. o/a Polaris Polyglots is seeking enthusiastic Language Teachers specializing in French, Italian, German, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin, or Japanese.
Polaris Youth Development Inc. is a not-for-profit youth development organization dedicated to helping young people discover their interests, strengths, and potential. Through Polaris Polyglots, we are creating engaging language programs that introduce youth to both language and culture in a fun, welcoming environment.
We are a small, family-run organization that values creativity, teamwork, connection, and creating positive experiences for young people.
Position Summary In this engaging role, you will inspire learners ages 9–14 to develop practical language skills while building an appreciation for the cultures connected to the language.
Programs will be delivered in person at our SE Calgary location.
Each language program will consist of three progressive levels. Teachers will typically teach three one-hour classes on one day per week, with classes scheduled during an evening or weekend.
We are looking for instructors who can make language learning fun, interactive, and approachable. Lessons should include opportunities for conversation, games, activities, cultural exploration, and practical language use rather than relying solely on traditional classroom instruction.
This paid position is a great chance for a teacher, university student, language professional, or other qualified individual looking to supplement their income while helping build an innovative youth language program.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Polaris team to develop engaging and age-appropriate language lessons for Levels 1, 2, and 3.
- Deliver three engaging one-hour language classes one day per week.
- Create interactive and immersive opportunities for students to practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- Incorporate cultural traditions, customs, food, music, celebrations, geography, and other cultural elements into lessons.
- Encourage students to build confidence using the language in practical situations.
- Monitor student progress and provide supportive, constructive feedback.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and welcoming classroom environment.
- Adapt activities and instructional approaches to support different learning styles and abilities.
- Support students with learning differences or additional educational needs where appropriate.
- Collaborate with other Polaris instructors to develop curriculum materials, activities, and best practices.
Requirements
- Bilingual or fluent proficiency in English and the language you are applying to teach.
- Minimum two years of experience working with children or youth ages 9–14 in a group setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to engage, motivate, and connect with young learners.
- Genuine interest in language education and cultural exchange.
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Current First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it.
Assets The following are considered assets but are not required:
- Teaching or instructional experience in a classroom, tutoring, recreation, camp, or similar setting.
- Education-related post-secondary studies or credentials.
- Experience teaching languages.
- Experience working with learners of different skill levels.
- Knowledge of classroom management strategies.
- Familiarity with inclusive education practices and accommodations for students with learning differences.
- Experience developing lesson plans or curriculum materials.
