At Trade Winds to Success Training Society, our mission is to empower Indigenous individuals in Alberta through pre-trades training and pathways to employment. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Carpentry Instructor to support the successful delivery of our Residential Construction Program in Edmonton.
Reporting to the Manager - Residential Construction Program, the Lead Carpentry Instructor provides hands-on carpentry instruction, oversees day-to-day construction activities, supports student learning and employment readiness, and provides leadership and mentorship to the Carpentry Instructor. The role is integral to the successful delivery of the Eco-Smart Home curriculum and the completion of residential construction projects in a safe, high-quality learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver hands-on carpentry training using adult learning principles aligned with the Eco-Smart Home curriculum.
- Ensure students understand, retain, and apply curriculum concepts in practical residential construction settings, while adapting instruction to varying learning styles and skill levels.
- Oversee assigned portions of Eco-Smart Home builds to ensure compliance with Alberta Building Code, blueprints, specifications, project timelines, and quality standards.
- Monitor student performance, participation, progression, and job readiness; identify students requiring additional support and work with the Student Supports team to address barriers.
- Provide day-to-day direction, task assignment, guidance, and mentorship to the Carpentry Instructor to support consistent instructional quality and program delivery.
- Coordinate daily build activities and work with sub-trades, including plumbing, HVAC, and electrical,
to maintain project progress and create meaningful learning opportunities.
- Maintain a safe work and learning environment in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety requirements, Trade Winds policies, shop rules, and student code of conduct.
- Plan, order, and manage materials, tools, and services to support construction timelines and avoid disruptions to instruction and program delivery.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student progress and participate in weekly case management meetings, reporting, and continuous improvement activities.
- Support Residential Construction Program outreach activities and other program delivery needs as directed by the Manager - Residential Construction Program.
Qualifications & Key Competencies
- Certified Journeyperson Carpenter with relevant residential construction experience.
- 2-3 years of experience working with Indigenous communities or Indigenous students is preferred.
- 2-3 years of experience instructing, coaching, or mentoring adult learners, ideally in a trades or technical training environment.
- Robust ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and specifications.
- Solid knowledge of residential construction practices, Alberta Apprenticeship standards, Alberta Building Code requirements, and workplace safety.
- Strong communication, leadership, organization,
and problem-solving skills, with the ability to motivate students and support different learning styles.
- Dependable and adaptable, with the ability to manage changing project conditions, classroom needs, and construction timelines.
- Physical ability to work in a construction environment, including lifting up to 50 lbs. and working at heights.
- A commitment to safety, professionalism, cultural awareness, mutual respect, and an inclusive learning environment.
Travel Requirement Travel is a requirement of this position. The successful candidate must be available to travel for a minimum of four (4) weeks per year to support outreach program delivery and other organizational needs. Travel involves working in communities outside Edmonton and supporting instructional and construction activities away from the primary work location.
Compensation The annual salary range for this position is $76,000 - $84,000, based on qualifications and experience.
