Athabasca County is currently accepting applications for paid on-call/ volunteer Firefighters to join our team of dedicated firefighters. Under the direction of the District Chiefs, Firefighers respond to emergency incidents such as: fires, medical first responses, motor vehicle incidents, alarm calls, hazardous material incidents, rescue incidents and rail incidents when available. This position will also participate in regular training, public education, preventative maintenance, and other duties as required. We are recruiting for Fire Stations in Caslan, Colinton, Grassland, Richmond Park, Rochester, and Wandering River.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide firefighting and rescue operations support in response to fires, disasters, and other emergency incidents.
- Operate firefighting equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
- Work with your team to run hoses, control water streams, climb ladders, and use the tools and gear needed to put out fires and handle emergencies.
- Provide medical assistance and support until advanced medical personnel arrive.
- Drive and operate fire trucks and other equipment when needed.
- Keep vehicles, tools, and medical equipment in top condition.
- Be involved in community programs and events.
- Attend a minimum of 15 hours of practice, 1 formal training event, and respond to at least 10% of district emergency incidents per year.
Key Qualifications & Skills:
- Must live within 15 minutes of an Athabasca County Fire Hall and be able to have regular attendance for training, fire calls and community events.
- High-school Diploma (preferred).
- At least 18 years of age.
- A valid class 5 driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check.
- Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
- Friendly, positive, and solutions-oriented in representing the County and be able to remain calm in stressful situations or emergencies.
- Knowledge of current firefighting techniques and tactics, fire department functions and responsibilities (preferred).
- Be able to lift and carry heavy gear when needed — such as carrying 20–40 lbs of equipment up stairs while wearing about 50 lbs of protective gear or dragging someone weighing over 200 lbs during a rescue.
- Have good vision, hearing, movement, and coordination to handle both everyday and unexpected firefighting tasks.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position is $16.83 - $35.19 per hour.
