JOB SUMMARY:
The Parks Equipment Operator I performs front-line operational work including ground maintenance, waste collection, general cleanup and minor repairs necessary to maintain parks, recreation areas and civic properties This is a safety sensitive role and requires the incumbent to operate vehicles, small multipurpose equipment and hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner, often in and around public spaces and users. The incumbent is expected to respond flexibly to changing operational priorities, support other Parks activities as assigned, work cooperatively with the Parks team and follow established procedures, safety requirements and service standards. Performs related duties as assigned.
This is a physically demanding role that involves regular exposure to safety hazards, and requires the incumbent to work outside in all weather conditions. The Parks Equipment Operator I is required to be on call outside of regular working hours to respond to operational emergencies and may be required to fulfill standby responsibilities on a rotating schedule.
As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain transparent Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Training:
Grade 12 diploma. Valid BC Driver’s Licence, Class 5 Unrestricted with Air Endorsement, with a driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour. WHMIS certificate. Chainsaw operator training.
Traffic Control
Person training. Forklift operator training to the applicable CSA standard.
Airside Vehicle Operator
Permit (AVOP).
Restricted Operator
Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC-A). Valid BC Landscape Pesticide Applicator Certificate or Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weed Pesticide Applicator Certificate. Playground inspection or safety training based on applicable CSA standards.
Experience: Six (6) months of experience operating similar equipment and performing parks, grounds or general maintenance work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of parks, grounds and civic property maintenance practices. Demonstrated skill in performing grounds maintenance, general cleanup, waste collection, minor repairs and physically demanding labouring work in varying weather conditions. Demonstrated skill in safely operating vehicles, small multipurpose equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, chainsaws and hand and power tools.
Sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform the required duties. Ability to perform routine inspections and authorized preventive maintenance and recognize when equipment requires repair or removal from service. Working knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and occupational hazards as they relate to the position.
Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices related to mobile equipment, traffic control, hazardous products, waste handling and public-area maintenance.
Working knowledge of pesticide labels and applicable provincial pesticide requirements when pesticide application is assigned. Ability to identify, control and report hazards in parks, playgrounds, trails, campgrounds and other civic properties.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, operating procedures, labels and safety information. Strong communication skills support respectful interaction with the public, coworkers and other City departments. Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, reliability and care when working around the public, vehicles, equipment and potentially hazardous materials.
Ability to organize assigned work and adapt to changing priorities Ability to work within, and contribute to, a high-functioning team environment. Ability to learn and apply changing systems, procedures and policy requirements, support service continuity and approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the current pay rate of $37.03 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
