Principal Engineer I
Primary Purpose
Summarize the purpose of the position in two or three sentences.
As a technical leader, provide guidance, expertise and mentorship for engineering projects, technical challenges and programs. Drive leading practice and transfer of technical expertise and knowledge.
Contribute subject matter expertise in a relevant discipline as needed to improve outcomes, projects, and programs. Develop and shape problems so they can be broken into solvable pieces. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge in relevant practice areas and apply theory to achieve valuable practice across all relevant practice areas. Use advanced techniques and engineering tools in the modification or extension of theories and practices of relevant practice areas and disciplines.

1. Review, investigate and develop appropriate recommendations regarding assigned engineering projects and/or technical challenges within specific technical discipline.

Job Scope
Nature of work
Works on complex issues and implements solutions mostly through the determination of strategy and delegation to others in a group or functional area. Focus is on multiple sites or programs; large scale projects; provides regional support
Level of interaction
Often collaborates with managers and/or functional or site leaders and has some interaction with external colleagues.
Autonomy/decision making
Works under limited supervision and has significant latitude to set objectives, priorities and timelines that may impact a group or functional area within the company
Budgetary responsibility
Contributes to budget preparation by supplying costs and recommendations
Managerial responsibility
Technical leader; no managerial responsibility
Requirements
Describe any specialized education, experience, knowledge, skill, or ability that is required on a regular basis to perform the essential functions of this position.

Minimum requirements that a candidate MUST have in order to even be considered for the position.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related engineering discipline and seven (7) years of experience in related engineering field; OR
- Master’s degree in Engineering or related engineering discipline and five (5) years of experience in related engineering field; OR
- PhD in Engineering or related engineering discipline and three (3) years of experience in related engineering field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering
- Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusion
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, both verbally and in writing
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment.
- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
- Client promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as allowed by applicable state laws.
