Position Overview
Rockcliffe Flying Club is seeking a dependable and experienced Snow Boss to lead, organize, and supervise the airport's winter snow-removal team at Ottawa-Rockcliffe Airport (CYRO).
The Snow Boss will be responsible for coordinating snow-clearing operations during winter weather events, including organizing staff, assigning equipment, establishing clearing priorities, monitoring progress, and ensuring the runway, taxiways, apron and other airport areas are cleared safely and efficiently.
This is a hands-on supervisory position. The Snow Boss will serve as the lead person during snow events and will be responsible for ensuring the snow team is organized, properly deployed, and working safely and effectively.
Key ResponsibilitiesSnow Team Supervision & Organization
- Lead and supervise the airport snow-removal team during winter operations.
- Organize and schedule snow-removal personnel based on forecasted and actual weather conditions.
- Determine staffing requirements for upcoming snow events.
- Contact and coordinate available snow-removal personnel when a response is required.
- Assign operators to specific vehicles, equipment, and areas of the airport.
- Conduct pre-shift briefings and communicate the snow-clearing plan to the team.
- Establish priorities and provide clear direction to snow-removal personnel throughout each snow event.
- Monitor employee performance and ensure assigned areas are being cleared effectively.
- Coordinate shift changes and relief personnel during extended snow events.
- Ensure appropriate staffing is maintained until required airport surfaces have been cleared.
- Provide training and operational guidance to members of the snow team.
- Promote a professional and safety-focused working environment.
Airport Snow Removal Operations
- Develop and coordinate the snow-clearing plan for each winter weather event.
- Establish clearing priorities for the runway, taxiways, apron, access roads, parking areas and other airport surfaces.
- Coordinate the movement of snowplows, loaders, tractors, sweepers and other snow-removal equipment.
- Monitor weather conditions and adjust the snow-clearing plan as conditions change.
- Coordinate snow-removal activities around aircraft movements and other airport operations.
- Conduct inspections during and following snow-removal operations.
- Identify areas requiring additional clearing, sanding, sweeping or other corrective action.
- Monitor snowbanks and accumulated snow to prevent interference with aircraft operations, airport infrastructure and visibility.
- Maintain regular communication with airport management regarding snow conditions, staffing, equipment availability and operational progress.
- Assist with the operation of snow-removal equipment when required.
Equipment & Safety
- Ensure snow-removal equipment is inspected and ready for service before anticipated weather events.
- Confirm operators are familiar with the equipment they have been assigned.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and in accordance with airport procedures.
- Report equipment defects, damage and maintenance requirements to management.
- Ensure snow-removal personnel follow airport vehicle procedures and airside safety requirements.
- Identify and report hazards or operational concerns encountered during snow-removal activities.
- Maintain appropriate records of snow-removal activities, staffing, equipment use and operational issues.
Qualifications
Required:
- Previous experience supervising or coordinating employees, crews or operational teams.
- Experience with snow removal, heavy equipment, construction, municipal operations or a similar operational setting.
- Strong leadership, organization and communication skills.
- Ability to organize personnel and equipment effectively during time-sensitive operations.
- Ability to make decisions independently and respond to rapidly changing conditions.
- Valid Ontario driver's licence.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in winter conditions.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to respond to the airport when required.
- Availability for irregular and on-call hours based on weather conditions, including overnight shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Strong commitment to workplace and operational safety.
Preferred:
- Previous experience supervising commercial or municipal snow-removal crews.
- Airport snow-removal or airside operations experience.
- Experience working around aircraft or within an airport environment.
- Experience operating loaders, tractors, plow trucks, sweepers or other heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with winter surface condition assessment and reporting.
Working Conditions The Snow Boss is a seasonal winter operations position, with working hours determined primarily by weather and airport operational requirements. The successful candidate must be prepared to respond to snow and ice events at various times, including early mornings, evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays.
Major weather events may require extended shifts and continuous coordination of multiple employees and pieces of equipment.
Work will regularly take place outdoors in cold temperatures, blowing snow, reduced visibility and other challenging winter conditions.
The Ideal Candidate The ideal Snow Boss is an organized and dependable leader who can take control of a winter weather event and coordinate the team from start to finish.
We are looking for someone who can assess the situation, determine what needs to be done, organize the available people and equipment, clearly communicate the plan, and ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently.
Previous airport experience is an asset but is not required. Candidates with strong experience supervising teams in commercial snow removal, municipal winter maintenance, construction, landscaping, heavy equipment operations or similar industries are encouraged to apply.

Ottawa-Rockcliffe Airport (CYRO) is an active general aviation airport serving the Ottawa region. The airport supports flight training, private and commercial aviation, aircraft maintenance and other aviation activities.
Winter operations are critical to maintaining safe and reliable airport operations. The Snow Boss will be the lead supervisor for the airport's snow-removal team and will play an important role in keeping CYRO operational throughout the winter season.
Pay: $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
