Qualifications
Description: This role is responsible for designing, delivering, and continuously enhancing student-focused co-curricular programs that foster meaningful experiential learning, leadership development, personal growth, and readiness for transition post-graduation. This term position will focus on cross-campus coordination and promotion of programming for graduating students to help ease their transition into work, community, and further educational opportunities. This will involve working with units across campus to recognize existing programming, along with developing and delivering new programming where needs exist.
Grounded in a student-centred and strengths-based approach, the position creates opportunities for students to learn through experience, reflection, and active engagement, helping them connect classroom and campus-involved learning with real-world applications to develop confidence, transferable competencies, and community belonging.
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- A Bachelor's degree from a relevant discipline (e.g., Social Sciences, Education, Humanities, Student Affairs) is required.
- Training in Mental Health First Aid (or equivalent) and Sexual Violence Awareness (or equivalent) is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of directly related experience required.
- Previous work with post-secondary students preferred.
- Experience as a student leader in a formal student organization preferred.
- Experience with team-building, program development, and workshop facilitation is required.
- Demonstrated programming experience with leadership education, volunteerism, and/or peer-to-peer programs is required.
- Experience developing programs using a competency development framework preferred.
- Experience within Student Affairs in the post-secondary environment preferred.
- Experience coordinating and/or managing program participants/volunteers and event planning is required.
- Experience supervising student staff and contributing to a developmental environment where students are challenged and supported in achieving their goals required.
- Experience creating visual and written promotional materials for programs and services required.
- Experience working with diverse populations preferred.
- Experience applying principles and practices related to equity, diversity, and inclusivity; experience creating programming that is aligned with an anti-oppressive framework is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively with students, staff, employers, alumni and the public.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to provide constructive feedback required.
- Sound risk management skills required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Forms) and using intermediate features associated with a Windows computer environment required.
- Proficiency in relevant UM software including Aurora Student, Orbis (UMConnect), WordPress, Events Calendar, and Drupal required.
- Must have problem-solving, conflict resolution skills, and be able to apply a solution-focused framework.
- Effective time management, record keeping, and organizational skills required.
- Demonstrated skill/aptitude in cross-cultural communication required.
- Ability to work with students of diverse educational, age, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds required.

Key responsibilities
Managing & delivering Student Experience and Development co-curricular programs
- Develops and facilitates key programming for Student Experience and Development co-curricular programs from a student-centred, growth-based lens.
- Coordinates all aspects of select Student Experience and Development programs, including overseeing and determining all logistical details for programming and events.
- Develops and implements marketing and communications strategies/efforts for engaging students, staff, and faculty with the assistance of the Student Affairs Communications team that is inclusive of social media, web, and written articles.
- Recruits, interviews, selects program participants, program volunteers, and/or student staff.
- Conducts participant intake to understand needs, assess interests, identify skills, and explore/identify engagement opportunities that support established career planning goals.
- Builds collaborative working relationships with participants, including individualized planning, accommodation of participant needs, and mentoring.
- Develops and facilitates appropriate training / experiential / presentation sessions to student participants.
- Reviews, assesses, and provides developmental feedback on participant work, including goal setting and reflection.
- Develops, interprets, and implements appropriate program policies to manage student participation.
- Celebrates participant successes,
including maintaining detailed records to validate Experience Record recognition.
- Plans and facilitates accessible multi-modal engagement strategies, including synchronous programming (e.g., large group presentations / small group planning/workshop sessions online and in-person) and asynchronous engagement (e.g., online training modules, MS Teams engagement activities, UMLearn discussion boards).
- Researches and incorporates principles and practices of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and anti-oppression directly and indirectly into programming
Supervision (as required)
- Supervises student staff workloads, coordinates student staff schedules, and delegates tasks within the Student Experience and Development team.
- Evaluates performance and provides developmental feedback on a regular basis.
- Develops training and career development plans for student staff.
- Provides references or activity verification, as necessary.
- Participates in the hiring process, as necessary.
Promoting student involvement & engagement
- Educates on and encourages intentional participation in activities to build citizenship and employability skills, including experiential learning, paid work, co-op, service-learning, and volunteer experiences that enhance student experience and career success.
- Organizes and facilitates career development workshops for students.
- Facilitates appropriate training and consults on project planning and implementation for partner organizations and students.
- Supports the coordination of events related to student engagement and experiential learning at the University of Manitoba.
- Liaises with other units and departments to promote Student Experience and Development, its services, and programs.
Administrative & planning tasks
- Monitors and reports regularly on student engagement in programming and provides end-of-term / end-of-program statistics.
- Conducts annual (mid-term, where appropriate) program reviews and evaluates program and student learning outcomes to inform future program planning activities.
- Proposes program updates / conceives of new program ideas as necessary to support the mandate of Student Experience and Development.
- Fosters relationships with campus partners, including developing and interpreting program policies, developing mutually beneficial program outcomes, and soliciting and incorporating partner feedback.
- Adheres to FIPPA and PHIA policies and follows records management protocols.
- Represents Student Experience and Development on committees and working groups, as necessary.
