Reporting to the Manager, Faculty of Human and Health Sciences Administration Services – Prince George, and working closely with the faculty coordinators responsible for undergraduate nursing programs in the School of Nursing, the Nursing Program Advisor is part of the broader Faculty of Human and Health Sciences (FHHS) administrative team.
The Nursing Program
Advisor works with School of Nursing and FHHS staff, faculty and instructors, with internal stakeholders in other University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) departments, and with external stakeholders to effectively advise current and prospective students and to support operational effectiveness of undergraduate nursing programs.
We are seeking an Undergraduate Nursing Programs Advisor (‘Advisor’) to support students in the Northern Baccalaureate Nursing Program (NBNP), a 20-month accelerated BScN program designed for learners with previous post-secondary experience and a pathway specifically for LPN entry to the program. The Advisor plays a role across the student learning journey from pre-admission inquiries through to graduation, providing administrative support for the program admissions process, liaising with other UNBC units for student supports, tracking student progression towards program completion, confirming graduates to the regulatory body, and otherwise ensuring NBNP students have access to robust and timely supports.
As part of the broader FHHS administration team, the Advisor works in a cooperative, team-based workplace, focused on continuous improvement and cross-functionality. This is an in-person position, located at UNBC’s Wood Innovation and Design Centre, in downtown Prince George; while focused on supporting the NBNP, this role also provides coverage for other program advisors in the School of Nursing. The Advisor typically travels to Fort St.
John one or two times a year for recruitment events and to meet in-person with students currently enrolled in the NBNP at the Peace River-Liard Campus.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Working within a team of program advisors to deliver high quality academic advising for undergraduate nursing students and to support nursing programs;
- Liaising with current and potentials students, the University community, collaborative and partner institutions, external student recruiting agencies, and the general public, as the first point of contact, whether in person, by telephone or email, to respond and provide general information for inquiries and develop and maintain effective internal and front-facing communications (i.e., recruitment materials, web sites);
- Providing academic advising for enrolled students and supporting pre-admission applicants through course credit transfer assessments, recruitment activities, and the promotion of undergraduate nursing programs;
- Providing program advising information to students and potential applicants at recruitment sessions, orientations, in one-on-one meetings, and via email;
- Updating and maintaining student record databases and spreadsheets including tracking student admissions and progression, monitoring multiple student records and file management, updating program statistics and preparing reports as required, and maintaining student and program information for accreditation;
- Preparing reports as required;
- Working closely with the academic program coordinators within the School of Nursing to support undergraduate nursing programs broadly, including course scheduling, supporting core committee meetings,
and ensuring appropriate level of resources are available;
- Working closely with external partners as appropriate, such as the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, BC Health Authorities, and college partners, to provide support for students in areas where these relationships intersect with program advising;
- Providing program support as a resource person for undergraduate nursing programs through research and data analysis; participating in strategic conversations with academic program coordinators, the Chair, School of Nursing, the Director, FHHS Administration, and the Dean, FHHS, to develop better ways to facilitate programs more effectively; and
- Working closely with UNBC’s Registrar’s Office team to ensure that transfer credits and admission decisions are tracked and communicated according to UNBC’s policies and procedures.
Qualifications The successful candidate must possess an undergraduate degree, preferably in nursing or a related health science, together with a minimum of five years related post-secondary academic advisement or university education experience. Knowledge of undergraduate nursing practice and programs, as well as experience in a student-related work environment like admissions, advising and/or recruitment would be ideal. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. It is necessary to have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a busy and challenging environment, as an active member of an integrated, cross-campus team. The candidate must be able to manage a workload with high levels of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Exceptional interpersonal (including both written and verbal communication) skills, with an aptitude for student service and building relationships are crucial. Sound judgement and discernment with problem solving skills are essential to success. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, Teams, Access, Outlook) and video conferencing software (eg, Zoom) are essential;
experience with relational database applications such as Banner are considered an asset. Knowledge of admissions, transfer credit, and degree audits would be ideal. A working knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) should be demonstrated.
A valid BC Driver’s License is required, as this position may require some travel by road or air.
Salary
This position has been classified at a Grade 11. The annual salary range for this position is $77,768.60 to $80,990.00 and the normal starting salary will be $77,768.60, pro-rated based on length of term and actual hours worked.
