New Steps

Winnipeg

New Steps Ltd. runs an Independent Living Program in Winnipeg for young people aged 16 to 21. Our residents are learning to run their own lives: getting to appointments, managing money, shopping, school, work, and everything in between. We are hiring Youth Life Skills Coaches to walk alongside them while they do it.

This is a hands-on, out-in-the-community job. You are not a counsellor and you do not need a degree. You are the steady, trustworthy adult a young person can count on - someone they actually want to see.

What you will do

- Drive residents to medical appointments, school, work, and community programs, and help them learn to get there on their own.
- Go grocery shopping with residents and help them plan meals and stick to a budget.
- Help with real-life tasks: forms, ID, bank accounts, phone calls, job searches, and booking appointments.
- Build genuine, trusting relationships with residents so they open up about how they are really doing.
- Notice what is going on with each young person and write a short, clear report after every visit, so the whole team knows where things stand.
- Stay in close contact with the other coaches and staff. Every coach works with every resident, so good notes and good communication matter.
- Encourage residents toward their goals and celebrate the small wins with them.

Who we are looking for

- People young people relate to and trust - warm, easygoing, and genuinely interested in them.
- Steady and mature. You can be friendly and still be the adult in the room.
- Reliable. When you say you will be there, you are there.
- Patient and non-judgmental. Our residents are figuring things out, and some days are harder than others.

- Comfortable writing short, factual notes in English.
- Experience working with youth or young adults is a strong asset - coaching, mentoring, youth programs, group homes, support work, recreation, or raising and supporting young people in your own life all count.

What this job is not

- Not a paid "life coaching" business and not a counselling or therapy role.
- No personal care, cooking, or cleaning - our house staff handle those.

Requirements

- Valid driver's licence and a reliable vehicle you can use for work (mileage is reimbursed).
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Willing to complete a Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and a driver's abstract before starting. We will guide you through them.

Nice to have (not required)

- First Aid / CPR, mental health first aid, or crisis and de-escalation training - we can help you get certified.
- Knowledge of Winnipeg community resources for young people.

Pay and schedule $20.00 per hour to start, part time (under 30 hours a week to start), with mileage reimbursed for work driving. Hours are mostly daytime and early evening, with some flexibility. We are hiring about 10 coaches and building a long-term team.

New Steps Ltd. is committed to respectful, inclusive,

and discrimination-free recruitment. Qualifications and requirements are interpreted in accordance with The Human Rights Code (Manitoba) and applicable accommodation obligations. If you need an accommodation at any stage of hiring, let us know.

Apply through Indeed with your resume and answer the screening questions. The two short scenario questions matter more to us than your resume.
