CDW is actively seeking an experienced, strategic, and hands‑on Senior Systems & Cloud Engineer for a 6‑month contract opportunity to support our mining industry client across Canada on a remote, hybrid, or onsite basis. In this critical infrastructure leadership role, you will lead a comprehensive assessment of server, storage, identity, and cloud environments within the first 90 days, delivering a gap analysis and a prioritized 2027-2028 roadmap. You will leverage your deep expertise in enterprise Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure landing zones, virtualization platforms (VMware/Hyper‑V), and PowerShell automation to define and implement enterprise infrastructure standards supporting OT/IT integration. This opportunity requires an elite systems and cloud engineer with extensive mining or industrial sector experience and readiness to travel to the Rook I site in Northern Saskatchewan.
Detailed Job Description
As a Senior Systems & Cloud Engineer supporting CDW’s client, you will take full technical ownership of infrastructure assessments, cloud architecture design, and modernization roadmaps across industrial and mining sector environments. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities include designing, building, deploying, and operationalizing infrastructure and cloud solutions from concept through production, establishing Azure landing zones, governance, IaaS, security, and cost optimization frameworks. You will collaborate closely with engineering teams to ensure system interoperability, transition infrastructure from managed services to in‑house operations, and support greenfield projects and build‑outs. Furthermore, you will execute PowerShell automation, configure Microsoft Entra ID and PKI security controls,
and meet site security and travel requirements for Northern Saskatchewan deployments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a comprehensive 90‑day assessment of server, storage, identity, and cloud environments, delivering a formal gap analysis and 2027-2028 roadmap.
- Define and implement enterprise infrastructure standards for servers, cloud services, identity, and data platforms supporting OT/IT integration.
- Design, build, deploy, and operationalize resilient infrastructure and cloud solutions from initial concept through production deployment.
- Establish and manage Azure landing zones, cloud governance, IaaS frameworks, security baselines, and cost optimization strategies.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to ensure seamless system interoperability and scalable infrastructure operations.
- Support the strategic transition of enterprise infrastructure from managed services providers to internal in‑house operations.
- Execute advanced PowerShell automation scripts and infrastructure‑as‑code deployments using Terraform or Bicep.
- Travel to the Rook I site in Northern Saskatchewan as required, meeting all site security protocols and operational requirements.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 7+ years of professional experience in systems engineering and cloud infrastructure architecture, ideally within mining, industrial, or energy sectors.
- Robust hands‑on technical expertise in Windows Server administration, Active Directory, Group Policy, PKI, and MS SQL Server administration.
- Proven proficiency in virtualization, storage, and backup/recovery platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V, Veeam).
- Deep practical experience designing, building, deploying, and supporting enterprise infrastructure and hybrid cloud environments.
- Strong Microsoft Azure experience encompassing governance, cost management, Azure landing zones, and scalable cloud architecture.
- Practical proficiency in PowerShell scripting, with working knowledge of Terraform or Bicep infrastructure‑as‑code tools.
- Solid understanding of Microsoft Entra ID, cloud security controls, IAM, and enterprise governance frameworks.
- Excellent troubleshooting, technical documentation, stakeholder communication, and interpersonal collaboration skills.
Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Professional Microsoft Azure certifications (AZ-104 Administrator Associate preferred; AZ-305 Solutions Architect Expert an asset).
- Prior professional background supporting greenfield industrial projects and complex infrastructure build‑outs.
- Direct experience transitioning enterprise IT environments from third‑party managed services to internal operations.
- Familiarity with operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) convergence and industrial networking standards.
- Physical readiness and willingness for site travel to remote northern locations (Northern Saskatchewan).
