Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Embedded Systems Engineer Intern to support the development of Yo-Go, EsseReale’s next-generation electric personal mobility platform.
EsseReale is a mobility startup developing Yo-Go, an ultra-light, seated electric personal mobility platform designed for safe, hands-free, and inclusive urban travel. Yo-Go is designed for pedestrian-friendly environments and prioritizes comfort, stability, portability, and intuitive body-weight-shift control.
The Embedded Systems Engineer Intern will support the development and integration of real-time firmware, sensor interfaces, communication links, safety logic, and hardware-in-the-loop testing capabilities required for Yo-Go’s software development, validation, and testing.
Responsibilities
- Develop embedded firmware in C or C++ for microcontrollers used in Yo-Go control, sensing, safety, and data acquisition subsystems.
- Integrate sensors and peripherals, including IMUs, load cells, battery management systems, motor controller interfaces, emergency stop inputs, and status indicators.
- Interface with motor controllers and wheel modules using UART, CAN, PWM, or other required communication methods.
- Implement structured sensor reading, calibration routines, data filtering, fault detection, failsafe logic, and real-time status reporting.
- Support hardware in the loop setup for Yo-Go software development, stabilization testing, safety logic verification, and simulation feedback.
- Develop Python or ROS-compatible tools for logging, telemetry, debugging, tuning, and higher-level software integration.
- Work with the PCB designer to review pin maps, connector definitions, test points, signal requirements, and board bring-up procedures.
- Participate in bench testing, prototype assembly, field testing, root cause analysis, and technical documentation.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with embedded C or C++ and development environments such as STM32CubeIDE, Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, ESP-IDF, or comparable tools.
- Familiarity with microcontrollers, sensor interfacing, interrupts, timers, ADCs, PWM, communication buses, and real-time debugging.
- Working knowledge of CAN, UART, I2C, SPI, PWM, and serial logging for embedded system diagnostics.
- Experience with IMUs, encoders, load cells, battery management systems, motor controllers, or electric mobility hardware is an asset.
- Basic understanding of control systems, sensor fusion, safety interlocks, and fault handling for mechatronic prototypes.
- Experience with Python, ROS or ROS 2, Git, Linux, simulation workflows, or hardware in the loop testing is a strong asset.
- Ability to document firmware architecture, interface protocols, test results, and integration procedures clearly.
