The position mentors assigned Crossing Guards by modelling proper crossing techniques, coordinating coverage for absences, and providing crossing coverage as required. Rovers ensure pedestrians of all ages cross safely at designated locations while providing friendly customer service and remaining alert to activity at the crossing.Job Duties IncludeThe following responsibilities and duties of this position include but is not limited to:Direct and supervise the movement of pedestrians across the roadwayMonitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic management at the crossingCoordination of coverage for Crossing Guard absence(s)Mentors assigned Crossing Guards by modelling proper crossing techniquesEducate pedestrians on safe crossing practicesRespond to emergency issues involving vehicles and pedestrian trafficReport safety issues to supervisorProvide customer service to the pedestrians and the publicChampion of safety in the community on behalf of the Town of AjaxSkills/AbilitiesPrevious experience as a Crossing Guard is considered an assetAbility to use email, cellphone technology is requiredAble to stand at a crossing for up to five hours per day in all types of weatherAble to work in adverse weather conditions including extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind and be capable of working under all types of road conditions,



exposure to traffic noise and exhaust from vehiclesAble to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the publicAble to remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situationsAble to work independently without supervisionValid Class "G" Ontario Driver's LicenseMust provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening CheckWhat we offer to staffCompensation : We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position , including a daily Rover premium and a bi-weekly gas mileage premium.Hours of Work : This is a non-union position that works approximately 12 hours per week and depends on crossing location. School Crossing Guards work during the school year (September - June, excludes holidays and PA days) and must be available to work shifts between the hours of 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday, exact times are based on crossing guard location, but range from 2 to 4.5 hours per day.
