Location

This position is located at the York-Durham Regional Environmental Laboratory, 901 McKay Road, Pickering, Ontario.

Lab Technician 2 - REL

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, under the functional supervision of the Laboratory Group Leader.

The incumbent will:

- Set up and carry out assigned water, wastewater, sludge or environmental sample analysis for monitoring and compliance purposes
- Follow, review, and maintain approved laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and the Quality Assurance Manual
- Evaluate and report data as per laboratory protocols
- Prepare and evaluate quality control and calibration standards, reagents and media
- Utilize, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of analytical laboratory equipment
- Store, handle and quantify an inventory of chemicals and supplies
- Maintain compliance with the requirements of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA ISO 17025) and the Ontario Ministry of Environment under the Safe Drinking Water Act
- Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records




- Maintain safety knowledge and follow all safe laboratory practices
- Keep an open and respectful approach to engaging colleagues with diverse perspectives

The successful applicant will possess:

- A three year post secondary program specializing in the Sciences/Environmental Technology or a related equivalent discipline
- Registration or be eligible for registration as a Technologist with O.A.C.E.T.T., C.C.M. or equivalent
- Several years recent related laboratory work experience. Experience working in an environmental or ISO 17025 accredited laboratory preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel) and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Drinking Water Regulation, wastewater monitoring requirements, Laboratory Quality Assurance programs, Good Laboratory Practices, Canadian Biosafety Standard, and CALA Accreditation requirements
- The ability to work independently and in a team setting with minimal supervision
- Effective customer service, organizational, verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work under pressure
- A valid class 'G' Ontario Driver's Licence

CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 6

This position is with Salary Grade 6 and will be paid at the following hourly rates:

- Start:



$45.00 - Six Month: $47.50 - Job: $50.00
