Position Overview As the Assistant Utilities Manager at Emerald LakeLodge, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Utilities Manager inoverseeing, maintaining, and optimizing our complex utility systems. You willassist in leading a dedicated team to ensure the seamless operation of ourpower generation, water treatment, wastewater management, and other criticalsystems that keep our picturesque mountain lodge running smoothly. Yourexpertise will contribute to maintaining the delicate balance between moderncomfort and environmental stewardship in our unique alpine setting
Duties & Responsibilities SystemManagement and Optimization: Assist in overseeing theoperation, monitoring, and maintenance of ELL's comprehensive utility systems,including:
PowerGeneration and Distribution: Help manage diesel generators, turbines, and the propane bi-fuel system.
WaterTreatment and Distribution: Support ensuring secure, high-quality water supplythroughout the property.
WastewaterTreatment and Collection: Assist in operating the treatment plant and managingthe collection system.
FireSystems: Help maintain fire pumps and hydrants for emergency preparedness.
PropertyVehicles: Support overseeing maintenance and operation of lodge vehicles.
Fuels: Assist in managing diesel, gasoline, and propane supplies.
HotTub: Help ensure proper operation and water quality of guest amenities.
Conduct daily system checks,maintaining detailed parameter logs for all systems.
Assist in data analysis to ensureall systems operate within optimal ranges, helping to identify trends andpotential issues.
Support the development andimplementation of strategies to enhance system efficiency and reduce energyconsumption.
Liaise with external contractors for specialized maintenance and repairs as directed.
TeamLeadership and Development: Support the Utilities Manager inleading and mentoring the team of skilled professionals in the UtilitiesDepartment.
Help foster a positive teamculture that embraces continuous learning, innovation, and the 'One team,one resort' philosophy.
Assist in team management aspects,including: Supportingrecruitment and onboarding of new team members
Helpingconduct comprehensive training programs on all utility systems
Assistingwith regular performance evaluations and feedback
Contributingto professional development planning for team members
Supportingfair and efficient scheduling to ensure 24/7 coverage
Participate in and sometimes leadregular team meetings to discuss operational updates, safety procedures, andimprovement initiatives.
OperationalExcellence: Help develop, implement, andrefine preventative maintenance plans and schedules for all utility systems.
Assist in managing inventory ofequipment, spare parts, and consumables, ensuring optimal stock levels toprevent operational disruptions.
Support collaboration with otherdepartment heads to align utility operations with overall lodge objectives andguest satisfaction goals.
Contribute to identifying andimplementing cost-saving measures and efficiency improvements across allsystems.
Uphold and acquire certificationsas needed.
Stay informed about emergingtechnologies and industry best practices in sustainable lodge operations,helping to recommend and implement upgrades.
Safetyand Compliance: Support ensuring all operationsadhere to federal, provincial, and local safety standards, environmentalregulations, and operating permits.
Assist in implementing andmaintaining robust safety protocols, including: Confinedspace entry procedures
Fallprotection and working at heights
Hazardousmaterial handling and storage
Electricalsafety and lockout/tagout procedures
Help conduct regular safety auditsand assist in leading safety training sessions for the utilities team and otherrelevant staff.
Maintain all necessarycertifications for system operations, including Small Wastewater SystemOperator and Small Water System Operator qualifications.
Support compliance with allregulatory reporting requirements, helping to prepare and submit reports asneeded.
EmergencyResponse and Problem Solving: Assist in developing,implementing,
and updating comprehensive emergency response procedures forvarious scenarios.
Be on-call to respond toemergencies outside normal working hours, demonstrating quick thinking anddecisive action in addressing urgent operational issues.
Help lead periodic emergencydrills to ensure team readiness for various scenarios.
Support troubleshooting of complexsystem issues, using analytical skills to diagnose problems and implementeffective solutions.
AdministrativeDuties: Assist in managing departmentbudgets, including annual budget preparation and ongoing expense tracking.
Support overseeing payroll for theutilities team, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
Help develop and maintaincomprehensive SOPs for all utility systems and processes.
Assist in preparing detailedreports on system performance, efficiency improvements, and cost-savinginitiatives for lodge management.
Support maintaining meticulousrecords and documentation for all utility systems, including maintenance logs,repair histories, and regulatory compliance documents.
Help manage relationships withvendors and contractors, assisting in negotiations and ensuring high-qualityservice delivery.
Skills & Experience: Provenexperience in utility operations, preferably in a remote or hospitalitysetting.
Robust technicalknowledge of power generation systems, water and wastewater treatment, andgeneral mechanical/electrical systems.
Certificationsin Small Wastewater System Operation and Small Water System Operation (orwillingness to obtain).
Valid driver'slicense and ability to operate various types of vehicles and equipment.
Demonstratedleadership skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Strongproblem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to system maintenance.
Proficiency incomputer systems, including Microsoft Office and specialized utility managementsoftware.
Ability to workin a dynamic environment, often extending beyond regular working hours.
Physicalcapability to perform tasks in various conditions, including confined spacesand at heights.
Commitment toenvironmental stewardship and sustainable operations.
Excellentcommunication skills and ability to interact professionally with staff, guests, and external contractors.
Ability to step into the Utilities Manager rolewhen required.
