In this capacity, you will provide nursing care across the continuum of the patient's perioperative journey, including assessments, advocacy, education and training, facilitation of OR activities, patient family support, a coordination of surgical process. The RN works within a changing environment and in inter-skilled teams to advocate for and promote wellness while ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and ethical nursing care.The RN shares his/her knowledge and expertise with others and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice excellence. The RN continually enhances his/her practice and competencies through ongoing learning, education, experience and reflective practice.ResponsibilitiesThe primary role of the RN is to provide holistic, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, patient-centred quality care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards and SJHC's mission, vision, values and policies. The RN optimizes the patient ́s experience and care outcomes by:Being accountable for one ́s decisions and professional practice; Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient; Collaborating with other members of the patient ́s care team; and,Coordinating and communicating patient care activities.Patient CareThe RN has 4 key areas of responsibility:Acquires information to assess patient care and learning needsDevelops a plan of care and integrates nursing activities with other inter-professional activitiesEngages in critical inquiry and reflection to select evidence-based interventionsOrganizes nursing care and assigns or changes nursing care activities where appropriateEvaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and adjusts the plan as neededAnticipates,



recognizes and addresses rapidly changing situationsProvides health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategiesDocuments observations, assessments and care provisionContributes to discharge and transition planningRefers patient to other agencies or services as neededCollaboration & CoordinationServes as the primary resource for organizing and coordinating patient care activitiesEstablishes and maintains respectful, collaborative, therapeutic and inter-professional relationshipsCoordinates and communicates patient care activities for a safe and seamless transition and appropriate transfer of accountabilityParticipates in hospital committees and other groupsLeadershipAligns behaviour with SJHC's vision, mission and values and Code of ConductSupports the advancement of professional practiceUtilizes effective judgment in assigning patient care activitiesEngages in self-reflection, performance review and ongoing learningParticipates in mentoring, teaching and /or coaching students, co-workers and other regulated and unregulated health professionalsEmbraces change that leads to improved nursing practice and better patient outcomesAdvocates for a safe and healthy work environmentResearchParticipates in or supports research projectsSupports and participates in evidence based practice implementation and quality improvement initiativesQualifications IncludeMust have current General Class (Practicing)



Registration with the College of Nurses of OntarioMust have current BLS CertificationMinimum one year of recent and relevant Operating Room clinical experience required.Post Diploma RN Perioperative Nursing Certificate required. Candidates without this qualification may be considered if candidates have equivalent education and experience.Recent experience in Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Ophthalmology preferredMust be able to demonstrate theoretical/practical knowledge of the ORNAC Standards and/or AORN StandardsDemonstrated good communication skills/command of English, both verbal and writtenDemonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.Must be willing or have demonstrated continuous perioperative clinical development/competencyCNA certification in Perioperative Nursing is an assetBaccalaureate Degree in Nursing, preferredEvidence of good work ethics and an excellent attendance recordExcellent communication skillsDemonstrated knowledge and successful application of adult learning principles an assetUnity Health Toronto is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive organization.
