Intermediate/Senior Commercial Underwriter (Remote-Ontario/Atlantic) - Job# 217 - IW-217 Date of modification:
Job number: IW-217
Detail Job title: Intermediate/Senior Commercial Underwriter (Remote-Ontario/Atlantic) - Job# 217
Location: Toronto
Description The Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced Commercial Lines Underwriter to join its specialty underwriting team in a fully remote capacity. This is a Canadian-based position supporting commercial business across multiple regions.
The opportunity is particularly well suited to an intermediate-level underwriter who is ready to take on meaningful new business responsibility while continuing to develop under the mentorship of experienced underwriting leadership. A more senior candidate may also be considered.
The role has a strong new business focus and requires someone who can confidently assess a steady flow of commercial submissions, build productive broker relationships, and contribute to the continued growth of the portfolio. Candidates should be comfortable working independently in a remote environment while remaining highly cooperative with the broader underwriting team.
Candidates must be located in Canada and able to effectively support Eastern Canadian business hours.
The Employer
Our client is an established Canadian Managing General Agent focused on specialty and complex commercial insurance risks.
The organization operates in an entrepreneurial underwriting environment and provides underwriters with exposure to a broad range of commercial risks rather than limiting them to narrowly defined market segments. The business includes a mix of casualty, property, construction-related, hospitality, and other specialty commercial classes.
The organization offers the autonomy and pace of an MGA environment together with access to experienced underwriting leadership, professional development, and broader organizational resources.
About You
You are a commercially minded underwriter who enjoys new business, broker interaction, and solving complex underwriting problems.
You are confident making underwriting decisions but also value collaboration and are comfortable discussing differing perspectives with colleagues. You can advocate for your position while remaining open to feedback, coaching, and alternative approaches.
You are self-motivated, organized, and comfortable managing a meaningful volume of submissions without requiring significant day-to-day oversight. You enjoy developing broker relationships and understand how strong service, responsiveness, and underwriting judgment can help generate better submission flow and stronger hit ratios.
An MGA or specialty insurance background would be highly valued, although strong commercial underwriting experience from an insurer environment may also be considered.
