The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) performs a combination of duties including specimen procurement and processing.The Medical Laboratory Assistant may perform technical procedures under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist in compliance with current legislation and the policies and procedures of the Manitoulin Health Centre Laboratory.JOB DUTIES:Perform phlebotomy in both Inpatient and Outpatient settingsInform patients about procedures and give instructions as neededValidate relevant data and ensure that appropriate specimens are procured, troubleshoot as neededProcure and label specimens according to established protocolsValidate patient and order information according to lab policyProcess specimens according to established requirementsAssess specimen suitability and integrity and process accordinglyPrepare specimens for transport following Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulationsPerform clerical duties with little or no supervisionPerform lab tests according to Standards of Practice under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)Participate in cleanup and maintenanceMonitor supplies for expiry dates and ensure stock rotationFollow Quality Assurance policies and procedures and participate in quality assurance initiativesPerform only those duties that do not require interpretation, assessment or the exercise of independent judgementProvide training for various laboratory functions including phlebotomy and point of care testingOther duties as required by the Lab Medical Director or Lab ManagerPATIENT SAFETY:It is recognized that the processes employed by this staff position impact upon the safety and efficacy of MHC's patient care activities.All incumbents are directed to therefore utilize processes that contribute to the overall safe culture environment of our hospital.This is a direct responsibility of each and every staff member of this organization. .COMPETENCIES/BEHAVIOURAL:Service and Quality OrientationTeamwork and CollaborationLeadership PresenceCOMPETENCIES/TECHNICAL:Proficient in specimen collection, handling and processingPoint of Care System proficiencyKnowledge of basic Quality Control practicesProficient in Microsoft Platform (Word, Excel and Outlook),
