Job Type
Permanent, full-time position (5 days/week – 40 hours), based on-site at the SPCA de l’Outaouais in Gatineau.
Starting annual salary of $67,450 to $71,000 depending on experience (determined according to the current pay scale).

Job Summary
Reporting to the Animal Health Manager and working closely with the veterinary team, the Lead Animal Health Technician is responsible for supervising, guiding, and supporting the team of animal health technicians and assistant technicians in their medical, technical, and day-to-day tasks. The person in this position serves as the technical authority on the ground. They ensure the strict application of care and medical protocols established by the veterinary team (including intake examinations, vaccinations, administration of antiparasitic treatments, daily treatments, surgical procedures,
and euthanasia). They also ensure that high standards of clinical care are maintained and actively participate in the direct care provided to the shelter’s animals.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision and Coordination of the Technician Team
Supervise, guide, and provide technical support to the team of animal health technicians and assistant technicians on a daily basis;
Collaborate with the Animal Health Manager to plan the allocation of technical work, schedules, and clinical priorities;
Serve as a resource person and mentor to technicians and assistant technicians;
Participate in performance evaluations, onboarding, and ongoing training for technicians and technical assistants on new clinical procedures;
Oversee the onboarding, integration, supervision, and support of interns within the animal health team;
Work with the animal health manager and the veterinary team to continuously improve work methods and care protocols.
Quality Control and Biosafety Within the Animal Health Team
Ensure strict adherence to hygiene standards, biosafety protocols, and internal maintenance procedures throughout all clinical areas;
Ensure that the animal health team adheres to best practices and applicable regulatory requirements regarding animal handling and population management,
in accordance with established protocols;
Promptly report any medical or health-related issues to the animal health manager and the veterinary team.
Medical Resource Management and Compliance
Manage the inventory of medications, records, and medical equipment, including tracking stock levels, placing orders, procuring supplies, and maintaining required records, in accordance with OMVQ regulatory requirements and the protocols established by the veterinary team;
Ensure the safe and compliant management of biomedical waste in accordance with current procedures;
Participate in internal audits and ensure the maintenance, compliance, and proper functioning of medical equipment (sterilization, anesthesia machines, etc.), as well as the assessment of equipment needs.
Desired Profile
Requirements
College diploma (DEC) in animal health technology;
Several years of relevant experience in a veterinary clinic or shelter;
Excellent command of veterinary care techniques;
Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset.
