Job Description
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Regional Manager, Laboratory Medicine, and under the direction of the Division Head, Transfusion Medicine, responsible for developing and implementing standards (policies, procedures and guidelines) related to the transfusion of blood and blood products within Island Health as mandated by Health Canada Standards. Develops and directs the Subcutaneous Immune Globulin (SCIG) and Autologous programs for Island Health.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience Graduation from a recognized nursing program or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
Five years' recent related experience in medical and surgical setting within a tertiary care hospital including experience in blood transfusion practice. Current Basic Life Support certification required.
Skills And Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of evidence based nursing practice related to medical/surgical transfusion practices within a tertiary level teaching hospital.
Comprehensive knowledge of the BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards for Nursing Practice.
Knowledge of blood products and current transfusion practices
Proficiency in intravenous therapy.
Knowledge of research process and methodology.
Demonstrated ability to plan strategically, organize and implement programs, procedures and processes
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Demonstrated ability to perform method development, evaluations and cost benefit analyses
Demonstrated ability to prepare concise and accurate written reports and document procedures and processes for manuals using a variety of computer software applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach and mentor
Demonstrated ability to teach, provide orientation, conduct presentations
Demonstrated Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to deal effectively with others
Demonstrated ability to practice sound qualified judgment, leadership and team building skills, both internally and externally
Demonstrated ability to secure facts through investigation, information gathering and documentation
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement effective problem-solving processes
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
