Job Description Position Summary The Health & Safety Specialist implements and maintains health and safety programs at the Winnipeg, Manitoba facility. This individual contributor role works closely with associates and leaders to identify workplace hazards, coordinate practical improvements, and support safe day-to-day operations. Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Specialist manages assigned program activities, conducts inspections, supports investigations, and delivers safety training. The role requires a regular presence on the production floor, sound judgment, and consistent follow-through on corrective actions.
Goals and Objectives Support a proactive safety culture in which associates report hazards and near misses promptly and participate in improvements. Complete assigned Site Safety Plan activities and follow through on corrective actions with responsible owners. Maintain accurate records, current procedures, and reliable training documentation. Measure success through the quality and timeliness of completed activities, the verified effectiveness of corrective actions, and associate engagement.
Organizational Relationship This position reports directly to the Manager, Health & Safety.
Key Responsibilities Maintain a visible presence on the production floor; conduct safety gemba walks, workplace inspections, and observations to identify hazards and discuss improvements with associates and supervisors. Prepare and update job hazard analyses, safe work procedures, and lockout procedures and placards with affected teams; obtain appropriate technical review before use. Conduct routine incident and near-miss investigations within assigned authority and training; document findings, recommend corrective actions, and support complex investigations led by the Manager. Coordinate and deliver new associate orientation, toolbox talks, and refresher training using approved materials; maintain attendance and completion records. Support development of training materials and coordinate specialized training, including lockout and powered mobile equipment; deliver specialized instruction only when qualified and authorized. Provide practical guidance and constructive feedback on safe work practices; work with supervisors to address unsafe conditions and behaviors promptly and elevate serious or unresolved risks. Support safety certification, Critical 15, and machine guarding audits; gather evidence, document findings, and follow up on corrective actions. Support JHSC meetings, inspections, and follow-up activities,
and encourage associate involvement in safety teams and initiatives. Support site emergency response arrangements as assigned. Provide first aid only when trained, currently certified, and designated by the site, within the scope of that training.

Sound judgment in identifying hazards, prioritizing actions, and recognizing when additional technical support is needed. Professionalism, discretion, and constructive conflict resolution when handling safety concerns and sensitive information. Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and build positive working relationships.

Relevant co-op, internship, or equivalent practical experience may be considered. Manufacturing or industrial experience is preferred. Experience with inspections, corrective actions, incident investigations, or safety training is an asset. Working knowledge of Manitoba workplace safety and health requirements, with the ability to apply established procedures and recognize when guidance is needed. Education and Certifications Diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. MADE SECURE core training and professional certifications such as CRST, CRSP, CHSC, or NCSO are considered assets. Ability and willingness to complete role-relevant training, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training where assigned. Technical Skills and Tools Practical understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation methods, and occupational health and safety programs.
Internal auditor training or approved internal auditor status for SAFE Work Certified is an asset. Familiarity with Lean methodologies, ergonomics, and continuous improvement tools is an asset. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook, including maintaining records and preparing clear reports and training materials. Familiarity with EHS platforms such as ProcessMap/Ideagen or PowerApps is an asset; ability to learn the site’s systems is required. Professional Development This role offers the opportunity to build technical expertise through practical experience, guidance from the Manager, Health & Safety, and progressively more complex assignments. Potential progression to Senior Specialist and, over time, management roles will depend on demonstrated performance, capability, and available business opportunities.
