The Opportunity
We are looking for a compassionate, dependable, and hardworking Animal Care Attendant to join our team.The Animal Care Attendant plays an important role in ensuring our patients receive exceptional care throughout their stay at the hospital. This position works closely with our veterinarians, RVTs, veterinary assistants, and client care team to maintain a clean, safe, organized, and comfortable environment for our patients.This is an ideal opportunity for someone who loves animals, takes pride in providing excellent patient care, and wants to gain valuable experience working within a veterinary hospital.
Key Responsibilities Patient Care
- Provide compassionate, attentive care to hospitalized and recovering patients.
- Feed patients and provide fresh water according to individual care instructions.
- Walk dogs and provide appropriate bathroom breaks, exercise, and enrichment.
- Clean and maintain kennels, cages, runs, and patient areas throughout the day.
- Monitor patients for changes in appetite, behaviour, elimination, comfort, or overall condition and promptly communicate concerns to the veterinary team.
- Assist with safe patient handling and restraint as directed by the veterinary team.
- Assist with patient transfers throughout the hospital.
- Provide comfort and reassurance to anxious, fearful,
or recovering patients.
- Follow individual patient care instructions carefully and ensure assigned care tasks are completed.
Surgical & Medical Support
- Assist the veterinary team with patient preparation and recovery when trained and directed to do so.
- Support the team with surgical and dental patient care, including maintaining clean and organized patient areas.
- Assist with post-operative patient monitoring and comfort.
- Ensure patients recovering from procedures are appropriately cared for and any concerns are immediately communicated to the veterinary team.
- Assist with preparing patients for discharge as directed.
Crossroads provides a range of surgical and dental services as well as diagnostic services including bloodwork, X-ray, and ultrasound, providing opportunities for the ACA to work alongside the medical team in a variety of clinical situations. Cleaning & Hospital Maintenance
- Maintain a consistently clean, sanitary, and organized hospital.
- Clean and disinfect kennels, treatment areas, equipment, floors, and other patient spaces.
- Complete laundry, dishes, garbage removal, and other routine cleaning duties.
- Clean and restock patient care areas.
- Assist with maintaining surgical and treatment areas as required.
- Properly dispose of waste, sharps, and biohazardous materials according to hospital protocols.
- Identify and communicate cleaning, maintenance, or supply concerns to the appropriate team member.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively with veterinarians, RVTs, veterinary assistants, and client care representatives.
- Assist the team with patient flow and general hospital operations.
- Help ensure patients are moved safely and efficiently throughout the hospital.
- Communicate patient observations and concerns clearly and promptly.
- Assist other members of the hospital team when needed.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful, and supportive team environment.
Client Experience
- Provide compassionate and respectful interactions with clients and their pets.
- Treat every patient and client with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
- Assist with bringing patients to and from vehicles or treatment areas when requested.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all hospital policies and procedures.
Safety & Patient Handling Working in a veterinary hospital means working with animals who may be sick, injured, painful, frightened, or unpredictable.The Animal Care Attendant is expected to:
- Follow protected animal handling and restraint practices.
- Recognize signs of fear, anxiety, stress, pain, or aggression.
- Use appropriate PPE and infection-control practices.
- Follow hospital protocols for infectious patients and contaminated materials.
- Immediately report bites, scratches, injuries, patient escapes, or other safety concerns.
- Ask for assistance when a patient cannot be safely handled independently.
Pay: $17.95-$20.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
