This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.
Reporting to the Deputy Minister, Community Services, the Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Development provides executive leadership and strategic direction for comprehensive strategies, programs, and initiatives to maximize economic growth and the benefits of trade, investment, and development across Nunavut, nationally, and internationally. The incumbent operates in a high-profile environment to build productive working relationships across Nunavut, Arctic, and Canadian business sectors, and leads efforts to advocate for Nunavut as a destination of choice for trade, investment, cultural experiences, education, mining, fisheries, and tourism.
The key responsibilities of the Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Development include but are not limited to:
- Provide executive leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight to the human and financial resources of the Economic Development Branch, including setting overall priorities in the annual Business Plan.
- Lead initiatives and projects that promote sustainable renewable and non-renewable resource development across key sectors, including minerals and petroleum, fisheries and sealing, tourism, and cultural products.
- Strengthen opportunities for creative and high-growth Nunavut businesses to access market intelligence, trade networks, and investment capital.
- Advise Ministers and senior government officials on strategic trade, investment, and economic issues, providing comprehensive policy advice, ministerial briefing notes, and executive recommendations.
- Develop and maintain strategic partnerships and linkages with key business, trade, and investment contacts to advance territorial economic priorities and support business network access.
- Lead and direct intergovernmental and interdepartmental consultations with federal, provincial, and territorial governments, Crown corporations, industry leaders, and stakeholder groups to influence decisions and facilitate investment.
- Represent the Government of Nunavut and participate in Institution of Public Government (IPG) processes, including Nunavut Impact Review Board and Nunavut Planning Commission hearings.
- Act as a senior spokesperson and government representative in high-level engagements with communities, ministers, regulators, industry partners, and other public forums.
The knowledge, skills,
and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized university degree in Business, Economic Development or related field, along with eight (8) years’ experience working at a senior management level in a government or private sector organization. Experience must be at a leadership level developing partnerships with stakeholders, clients and customers, along with leading teams and complex multi-stakeholder projects while developing and implementing strategic initiatives. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered. Applicants who possess equivalent education and/or experience that meets the requirements outlined above are encouraged to apply.
