About the Role
Camp Northland-B’nai Brith is seeking an experienced, thoughtful and dynamic camp professional to join our year-round team as Associate Director.
The Associate Director is a senior leader at Camp Northland and a key partner to the Camp Director in leading the people, culture and camper experience that define our community. With particular leadership responsibility for camper care and family experience, staff recruitment and development, enrollment and summer leadership, the Associate Director will play an important role in both the day-to-day excellence and long-term health and success of Camp Northland.
We are looking for someone who can see both the big picture and the details: a leader who can develop an outstanding staff team, thoughtfully navigate complex camper and family situations, improve systems, lead significant projects, and be an energetic and highly visible presence throughout camp. This is also a forward-thinking leader who looks ahead, anticipates the needs and opportunities that will shape Northland’s future, and wants to help shape the camp’s next chapter alongside the Camp Director and professional leadership team.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Camper Care & Family Experience
- Provide senior leadership for camper care and the overall camper and family experience, building strong and trusting relationships with campers and parents.
- Serve as a primary senior contact for families and navigate sensitive or complex situations with empathy, professionalism and sound judgment.
- Coach and support staff in responding to camper adjustment, peer relationships, behavioural challenges and individual needs.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Team,
medical staff and summer leadership to ensure campers are well supported and continually strengthen systems for camper care and family communication.
Staff Leadership & Development
- Lead seasonal staff recruitment, interviewing and hiring in partnership with the Camp Director and other leaders, while developing strategies to attract and retain exceptional staff.
- Lead pre-camp training and ongoing staff and leadership development.
- Supervise, coach and mentor members of the summer leadership team and establish strong expectations for supervision, feedback and accountability.
- Help build a staff culture rooted in care, growth, teamwork, accountability and an unwavering focus on the camper experience.
Camper Recruitment, Enrollment & Retention
- Lead strategies to recruit new campers, retain returning families and strengthen relationships with prospective and current families.
- Lead and participate in tours, information sessions, open houses and other recruitment initiatives.
- Monitor enrollment and retention trends, identify opportunities and challenges, and use family feedback to strengthen the camp experience.
Organizational & Summer Leadership
- Partner closely with the Camp Director on organizational priorities, annual planning and strategic direction, bringing a forward-looking perspective to the health and success of Camp Northland.
- Help translate longer-term vision into priorities and initiatives, identifying opportunities to strengthen systems, practices and the camp experience while protecting the culture and traditions that make Camp Northland special.
- Take ownership of significant projects and collaborate closely with the year-round professional team and summer leadership.
- Play a leadership role in safety, risk management and emergency preparedness, and represent Camp Northland within the Jewish community and camping field.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and quality of camp programming, traditions and the overall camper experience.
- During the summer, serve as a highly visible senior on-site leader,
providing leadership and decision-making across camp and helping ensure strong leadership coverage when the Camp Director is unavailable.
Responsibilities may evolve based on organizational needs and the roles and responsibilities of other members of the professional team.
Who You Are
We are looking for a leader who brings camp experience, strong relationship skills, emotional intelligence and excellent judgment. The successful candidate will ideally:
- Bring significant leadership experience in overnight camping. Jewish overnight camp experience is strongly preferred.
- Having experience in youth development, education or a related field can be an asset.
- Have a strong understanding of children and adolescents and meaningful experience supporting camper care and well-being.
- Be an exceptional relationship-builder and thoughtful communicator, particularly when navigating sensitive conversations with families and staff.
- Have demonstrated experience recruiting, supervising, coaching and developing staff and leaders.
- Combine warmth and empathy with clear expectations, accountability and the ability to remain composed in complex situations.
- Be a forward-thinking, organized and proactive leader who takes ownership, follows through, and can move comfortably between strategic thinking and hands-on leadership.
- Bring flexibility, collaboration, humour and resilience, with an appreciation for the role Jewish camp plays in identity, belonging and community.
- Be able to reside at Camp Northland for the summer season and understand that flexibility in schedule and responsibilities is an key part of the role.
Compensation: $80,000 to $90,000 plus benefits To Apply
