Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

- Completion of a formal post-secondary program from a recognized institution in a related discipline is required, with preference for a University degree in Recreation or Sport Administration Studies.
- Current Level One Indoor Climbing Gym Instructor Certification (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) required, Level Two preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

- One year of directly-related administrative experience is required.
- Minimum of 2 years directly-related experience working in a climbing environment is required.
- Experience supervising and scheduling staff, including hiring, training and managing staff schedules is required.
- High comfort level and experience with climbing harnesses, ropes, belay devices, carabineers and other related climbing apparatus required.
- Experience with route setting required including planning and executing is required.
- Active participating in climbing is required.
- Must have experience working in a Recreation setting and understand the elements of a quality program.
- Experience with climbing centre operation/maintenance/instruction is required.
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, supervising and scheduling staff as well as program development and evaluation in a climbing environment is preferred.
- Experience establishing and directing a climbing program preferred.
- Must work very well in a Team environment and be physically able to move climbing equipment.
- Experience with budgeting and program financial analysis preferred.
- Experience with risk management is an asset.
- Outdoor Climbing/guiding experience would be an asset.
- Experience with researching industry trends is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, are required.
- Excellent written and verbal skills are required; must be highly organised and efficient.
- Experience with budget preparation and monitoring would be an asset.
- Knowledge of programming elements (staff client ratio, sequential learning) related to delivering climbing programs is required.
- First Aid / CPR certification required.
- High level of leadership is required to maintain a professional environment.
- Indoor climbing skills and experience safely teaching indoor climbing skills at the ACMG Level are required.
- Specific knowledge and experience in administration of climbing programs required.
- Leadership skills & proven supervisory experience required.
- Interpersonal and communication skills, tact, and diplomacy are required.




- Ability to establish effective working relationships and work as a member of a team is required.
- Must be self-directed and creative.
- Ability to work under pressure and multi-task is required.
- Staff training & supervision experience is required.
- Must have positive customer service skills with an open attitude to working with a diverse population.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Diverse background in a wide variety of climbing and recreational programs either as an Instructor or participant.
- Understanding of a university setting preferred.
- Outdoor climbing skills.

Key responsibilities

Program Coordination

- Plans and develops annual plan for the climbing wall programs for a variety of demographics (children, students, adults) ensuring programs are age and skill appropriate for target markets.
- Performs market and industry research to determine appropriate program mix, price, trends, schedule etc. to help foster and grow the climbing community and participation.
- Works closely with Recreation Services and Mini U to offer programs aligned with the department’s missions and standards.
- Reviews and evaluates programming, including financial viability of programs.
- Provides detailed information to the Director Recreation Services on program specifics, participation levels, etc. on a bi-monthly and annual basis for reports.
- Provides input into budget development, price points and target markets for climbing programs.
- Provides instruction for adults and children of all abilities and supervise group sessions where required.
- Maintains a clear understanding of both the indoor and outdoor market, competitors, brands, consumer and client’s behaviors.
- Contributes to marketing strategies and promotes climbing to prospective customers.
- Develops a rapport with customers on an ongoing basis to ensure they feel connected to the program and are satisfied with the experience they are receiving.
- Maintains the highest customer service standards; analyzes and resolves customer service problems and complaints.

Wall Operations & Safety
- Oversees daily operations of the climbing wall.
- Supervises,



plans and executes the Active Living and Frank Kennedy Centre climbing wall’s route setting, including regular route setting and maintenance.
- Oversees the safety, security, and risk management at the climbing wall in collaboration with the Faculty’s Risk Management Committee.
- Schedules routine maintenance on a regular basis and a structural integrity check of the wall every two years or as directed by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
- Assesses the equipment and facility needs for the climbing wall, and initiates purchasing as required.
- In conjunction with the facilities department, identifies the need for facility renovation and development in keeping with the needs of programming across various stakeholders.
- In conjunction with the Scheduling Coordinator, oversees the climbing wall booking and rentals.

Climbing Staff Supervision & Training
- Responsible for hiring and training all climbing wall staff ensuring the climbing team operates in a skilled manner and maintains a high standard at all times.
- Arranges for complete training of all staff including general orientation to University, overview of mission, policies, procedures, risk management and job specific training related to climbing and wall operations.
- Ensures appropriate staffing levels to meet the needs of day-to-day operations.
- Ensures the climbing team operates within safety procedures, understands the policies and procedures and attends training as required.
- Mentors, guides, supports and assists staff in further developing their skills in climbing, instructing, customer service, etc.

Other Duties
- Works collaboratively as a member of the Recreation Services team, contributing ideas, expertise and feedback through team meetings, planning discussion and shared projects.
- Connects with various stakeholders to find solutions to issues and develops new business opportunities and strategies to present to manager.
- Attends regular meetings and works with various sub-groups on various projects and initiatives.
- Participates in other faculty committees as required.
- Other relevant duties as assigned.
