Company Description
East Coast Innovation designs and builds innovative solutions - like the SmoothMove fish loading technology – to solve global aquaculture challenges. We do this by using technologies like 3D modelling to create scale models of new designs and testing them in local research facilities. After validation, we use a blend of manufacturing techniques to create the complex shapes required for commercial application in the aquaculture sector.
We are a motivated group of individuals with an in-depth understanding of the aquaculture industry and a drive for continuous improvement.
Bottom line, we design and build really cool stuff. As a machinist here, you’ll help turn new designs into working prototypes and commercial equipment, not just run the same production parts every day.
Our team is looking for an experienced CNC Machinist. You will support our manufacturing team by working from part and assembly drawings and creating components or assemblies using manual and CNC equipment (CNC mill, lathe and waterjet, plus manual machines and hand tools). The ideal candidate will be able to work independently to set up and operate various CNC machines. The work is a mix of CNC machining and manual machining/fabrication.
You will have many opportunities to learn and develop your skill set as you support the manufacturing team in the development and manufacture of new and innovative products. You will report to the Chief Technical Officer and work alongside a small but mighty team.
What You'll Do
- Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes and waterjet, as well as manual machines,
to produce parts and assemblies from engineering drawings.
- Write and edit CNC programs at the control and using CAM software.
- Inspect finished parts to confirm they meet drawing tolerances.
- Measure the performance of mechanical components and devices.
- Maintain and modify equipment to ensure safety, reliability, and efficient performance.
- Work with the design team on design-for-manufacturability and new prototypes.
- Document setups so others can repeat them.
Requirements:
Technical Knowledge
- Ability to read and follow detailed engineering drawings to create finished parts – interpreting engineering drawings, tolerances, datums, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols.
- Material knowledge – how steels, stainless, aluminum, brass, plastics, and composites are cut and formed.
- Knowledge of cutting tools, feeds and speeds – choosing tool geometry, coatings, and inserts, and calculating RPM, feed rates, and depth of cut for a given material and operation.
- Problem solving – diagnosing chatter, poor finish, tool wear, or parts drifting out of tolerance, and working out the best order of operations.
- Good mechanical aptitude and spatial reasoning – visualizing the finished part and how to get there from raw stock.
Machine & Hands-on Skills
- Experience operating manual machines – lathe, mill, drill press, press brakes, ironworkers and saws.
- Experience with CNC operation and programming – G-code and M-code, setting work and tool offsets, and editing programs at the control; experience with CAM software and CNC turning, milling and waterjet cutting.
- Setup and work holding – fixturing parts rigidly and repeatably with vises, chucks, collets, soft jaws, or custom fixtures.
- Maintaining tolerances and ensuring precision of machined parts – use of micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators.
- Proficient with hand and power tools.
General
- 3 years of CNC machining experience.
- Good communication skills – working with other team members on design-for-manufacturability, and documenting setups so others can repeat them.
- A willingness to learn new techniques while supporting and inspiring the rest of the manufacturing team.
Nice to Have
- Welding experience: MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), stick (SMAW), and flux-core (FCAW).
- Experience in the aquaculture industry.
