Beyond Disability Services is seeking a compassionate, skilled and collaborative Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) to join our growing clinical team.
Beyond Disability Services provides multidisciplinary supports to children, youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome and other communication and developmental needs.
The CDA will work under the direction and supervision of a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to support the implementation of individualized speech, language, communication and social communication programs.
This role is ideal for a CDA who enjoys working directly with clients and families in a supportive, community-based setting and who is interested in helping build a growing multidisciplinary clinical service.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement speech and language intervention programs developed and prescribed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
- Deliver individual and small-group therapy sessions under the direction of the SLP.
- Support clients in developing skills related to receptive and expressive language, articulation, social communication, functional communication and other identified communication goals.
- Support the implementation and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems where prescribed by the SLP.
- Prepare therapy materials, visual supports, communication resources and activities based on individualized treatment plans.
- Observe and document client responses, progress and participation during therapy sessions.
- Collect data and maintain accurate clinical documentation in accordance with organizational and professional standards.
- Communicate relevant observations and progress to the supervising SLP.
- Support the generalization of communication skills across clinical, day program, recreational and community environments where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with families, Instructor Therapists, Behaviour Analysts, Occupational Therapists, program staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in clinical meetings, case reviews, training and supervision as required.
- Maintain client confidentiality and follow all organizational policies relating to privacy, documentation, safety and qualified conduct.
- Maintain therapy spaces, materials and equipment in a clean, organized and safe manner.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) program or equivalent recognized training.
- Experience supporting children, youth or adults with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of speech, language and communication development.
- Familiarity with AAC, visual communication systems and social communication interventions is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong documentation, organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to follow clinical treatment plans and direction provided by a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Compassionate, patient and respectful approach when supporting individuals with diverse communication and support needs.
- Current Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
